Anyone who followed NCIS from its initial 13 seasons would likely recognize Tony DiNozzo and Ziva David. These beloved characters, who were colleagues and potential romantic partners for eight seasons on the well-known CBS series, will reunite in September 2025 on the scheduled TV lineup under the fitting title NCIS: Tony & Ziva. Naturally, Tiva fans won’t need convincing to watch this Paramount+ spinoff. However, showrunner John McNamara has also hinted at how the series will introduce new viewers to the world of NCIS.
At San Diego Comic-Con, TopMob joined the panel for NCIS: Tony & Ziva. Here, McNamara sat alongside series leads and executive producers Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo. The discussion, led by Brian Dietzen from his role as Jimmy Palmer, commenced with a recap of Tony and Ziva‘s intricate relationship throughout the NCIS series. Later during the panel, when Dietzen inquired if the show was accessible for those unfamiliar with NCIS, McNamara stated: Could someone who hasn’t watched NCIS easily start watching this program?
In the upcoming episode, not only will I provide what you witnessed initially, but it will be played right at the start instead. Therefore, as a spectator, you’ll first delve into Tony and Ziva’s past storyline, and afterwards, we transition to Budapest.
It’s great news that the series NCIS: Tony & Ziva will start with a montage, given my curiosity about how they would engage an audience who may not be familiar with these main characters. While a newcomer to other NCIS spin-offs like NCIS: Sydney or prequels such as NCIS: Origins can gradually get the hang of it, Tony and Ziva have been together on screen for nearly a decade. It might be unrealistic to assume that everyone who tunes into this new show will immediately comprehend their unique relationship dynamics without some background context provided.

While you eagerly anticipate the return of NCIS: Tony & Ziva, why not explore other NCIS series on Paramount+? You can access these shows by opting for the Essential plan at $7.99/month or upgrading to the Premium plan, which is ad-free and offers twice the content from Showtime, for just $12.99/month. Additionally, the annual plan gives you 12 months for the price of 10! Check it out now! [View Deal]
Simultaneously, John McNamara expresses his hope that this compilation stirs nostalgia among long-time NCIS fans and perhaps encourages them to re-explore Tony and Ziva’s early days together. In his own words:
In my opinion, we’ve aimed to strike a balance between keeping the content familiar for seasoned viewers who might appreciate some nostalgia from the old episodes, while also making it accessible and intriguing for newcomers who can discover the charm of this series anew.
In the upcoming series “NCIS: Tony & Ziva,” I’m excited to share that I’ll be joining Tony DiNozzo, Ziva David, and their daughter Tali, portrayed by Isla Gie, as the only returning characters from the original “NCIS” show. The new additions to our cast include Amita Suman, Lara Rossi, Maximillian Oskinski, Julian Ovenden, and James D’Arcy. Mairzee Almas, Laurie Lieser, Shelley Meals, and Christina Straine are also on board as executive producers.
The upcoming series titled “NCIS: Tony & Ziva” will debut its initial three episodes on Paramount+, starting September 4. Subsequent episodes will air weekly until the season concludes on October 23. Currently, it’s just a one-season show, but if it performs well, I wouldn’t be shocked to hear talks about a potential “Tony & Ziva” Season 2, or even an official order for it.
