Melania has landed on a major box office chart.
The documentary about Melania Trump opened last weekend, earning $7.2 million – the strongest debut for a non-concert documentary in a decade. While viewers on Rotten Tomatoes gave it a high score, critics weren’t impressed, giving it only an 8% rating. Its 1.3 score on IMDb places it among the lowest-rated films ever on the platform, alongside titles like Foodfight! and Kirk Cameron’s Saving Christmas.
According to Deadline, the movie Melania is expected to earn $3.5 million over its first three days, which is a 51% decrease from its opening weekend. This will bring its total domestic earnings to $14.5 million, allowing it to surpass Saltburn and Sarah’s Oil and become the tenth highest-grossing domestic release ever for Amazon MGM Studios.
It’s not surprising to see this, as Amazon MGM Studios is a recently formed company – it officially launched in October 2023. Because of this, almost half of their current top 10 movies are scheduled for release in 2025 and 2026. Here’s a look at their top 10 movies as of today:
| Rank | Title | Domestic Box Office |
|---|---|---|
| #1 | Red One (2024) | $97 million |
| #2 | The Beekeeper (2024) | $66.2 million |
| #3 | The Accountant 2 (2025) | $65.5 million |
| #4 | The Boys in the Boat (2023) | $52.6 million |
| #5 | Challengers (2024) | $50.1 million |
| #6 | A Working Man (2025) | $37 million |
| #7 | Blink Twice (2024) | $23.1 million |
| #8 | American Fiction (2023) | $21.1 million |
| #9 | Mercy (2026) | $20.8 million |
| #10 | Melania (2026) | ~$14.5 million |
It’s very probable that Melania will fall out of the Top 10 soon, as several new titles from Amazon MGM Studios are scheduled for release. These include the crime film Crime 101 starring Chris Hemsworth (February 13), the sci-fi movie Project Hail Mary with Ryan Gosling (March 20), the Masters of the Universe reboot (June 5), and the sequel The Beekeeper 2 (January 15, 2027).
Some popular movies and shows from Amazon MGM Studios aren’t in the Top 10 because they were released directly on Prime Video and never shown in movie theaters. A good example is the action comedy Playdate, starring Alan Ritchson and Kevin James, which became the most-watched title on Prime Video when it launched in late 2025.
Despite appearing in the Top 10, Melania’s documentary isn’t making money. It was a costly project for Amazon, with around $40 million spent to secure distribution rights and another $35 million on marketing. The documentary needs to earn between $40 and $45 million to cover its costs, and it’s unlikely to achieve that in theaters.
