The world of Baldur’s Gate will be expanding onto television! HBO has greenlit a new series from Craig Mazin, the co-creator of The Last of Us. But instead of retelling the game’s story, the series will act as a direct sequel, continuing the narrative beyond where the game left off.
Mazin will be the creative force behind the upcoming HBO series based on Baldur’s Gate. He’s responsible for writing, producing, and overseeing the show, which takes place in the Forgotten Realms—a setting from the Dungeons & Dragons universe. He is also serving as a consultant on the project.
The Baldur’s Gate TV series will continue the story right after the ending of Baldur’s Gate III. As a result, characters and plot points from the game could be featured in the show.
A major appeal of Baldur’s Gate III is how much freedom players have to shape their own unique story. If characters from the game appear in the TV show, certain decisions and events will need to be established as official parts of the game’s story. This could be divisive among Baldur’s Gate III fans.
Unlike Fallout, Baldur’s Gate doesn’t have to consider future games in the series. Development on Baldur’s Gate III is finished, and Larian Studios is now focusing on a completely new project.
HBO Baldur’s Gate Television Show Will Continue the Story of Baldur’s Gate III
The new Baldur’s Gate series highlights two major trends in TV and movies. First, there’s a growing interest in fantasy, following announcements about projects like , and the progress being made on (which is also owned by Wizards of the Coast).
The entertainment industry is increasingly turning to video games for new stories and characters, often choosing them over comic books. We’ve seen a rise in bright and recognizable video game characters being adapted for TV and film lately, and there are many more adaptations planned for the coming years.
Like with The Last of Us, it’s clear Craig Mazin is a huge fan of the original material going into this new project. He actually finished Baldur’s Gate III on the hardest difficulty, Honor Mode, and he’s been playing Dungeons & Dragons tabletop for fifteen years – so he really knows his stuff!
Neil Mazin expressed his excitement about continuing the story of Baldur’s Gate 3, a game he’s spent nearly 1000 hours playing. He praised the collaboration between Larian and Wizards of the Coast, and as a longtime Dungeons & Dragons fan, he particularly admired how Swen Vincke’s team brought the game to life. Mazin is thrilled to help expand the world and its characters with care and respect, and he’s thankful to Gabe Marano and the Hasbro team for giving him this opportunity.
Baldur’s Gate III is a new installment in the Baldur’s Gate series, following the original trilogy of Baldur’s Gate, Baldur’s Gate II, and the Throne of Bhaal expansion. While Baldur’s Gate III nods to the earlier games, the original trilogy had a stronger connection – players could continue their characters from the first game into the second. All of these games are set in the Forgotten Realms, a popular and expansive fantasy world that’s central to the Dungeons & Dragons experience.
