A popular thriller series on Netflix recently concluded, and although the ending felt right for the show, it hasn’t ruled out a potential return. Netflix has become known for its excellent thrillers, and the genre is clearly a focus for the streaming service, hosting many of its most successful shows.
Several shows will be back with new seasons in 2026, including The Night Agent, Black Doves, and The Diplomat. Meanwhile, a very popular Netflix thriller ended in 2025. Though that often signals the end of a series, a sequel is still possible, and hasn’t been ruled out.
Netflix’s Hit Thriller Series Ended Like It Should Have
The thriller series You first aired on Lifetime on September 9, 2018. While it showed potential, it didn’t attract a large enough audience for a second season on that network. Fortunately, Netflix decided to pick it up, and the show, starring Penn Badgley, quickly became a hit on the streaming platform. You has become one of Netflix’s most popular series, ultimately running for five seasons.
The fifth and final season of You aired on April 24, 2025, bringing Joe Goldberg’s story to a close. The ending felt appropriate for Joe, who consistently portrayed himself as the good guy, despite being a dangerous threat to numerous women throughout the series. Given his actions, a happy ending for the serial killer simply wasn’t possible.
The way the story ended for Joe was fitting – he was imprisoned by the women he had harmed. While he wished for death, a more fitting punishment was to be left to face the consequences of his actions alone, to suffer in prison as he spent the rest of his life there – exactly what he feared most.
You Leaves The Door Open For A Return On Netflix
Although season 5 of You provides a satisfying conclusion to Joe Goldberg’s story, it’s common for popular TV shows to return somehow. Considering its success, Netflix might explore a sequel series in the future. Plus, since Joe is still alive, there’s a possibility Penn Badgley could reprise his role if he were to change his mind.
Season 6 of You, or a follow-up series, could easily pick up where things left off. A key element of the show’s success was Joe’s voiceover, which gave viewers a chilling look inside his twisted mind. It would be fascinating to see how years in prison would change him, and how his internal monologue would evolve. Watching Joe, a clever and resourceful character, try to navigate life behind bars could create a compelling new chapter for the series.
