From the very beginning, viewers of the show have been curious about the unusually high number of deaths at Split River High School. It’s also been puzzling that so few characters within the show have questioned these deaths, with the ghosts being the main exception, as they’ve had plenty of time to think about it. Season 3 is now starting to reveal some of those answers.
Season 2 of School Spirits hinted at a more sinister presence within Split River High, leaving viewers to wonder if Mr. Martin was simply trying to control the students. Season 3 now confirms his warnings were true. Something larger is happening at the school, and potentially throughout Split River, and it might explain the lack of interest in the school’s history of tragic deaths.
School Spirits Reveals the Tragedy That Might Have Started It All
Mr. South, the custodian at Split River High, is one of the few people who seems aware of the strange occurrences happening there. In Season 3, Episode 4, “The Bereftest Club,” he explains the Stone Tape theory to Maddie – the idea that places can absorb and replay past events. He thinks this theory applies to the high school itself, believing the building is trying to communicate something.
Maddie quickly figures out the memory the school keeps repeating. She and her friends—both living and dead—learn that Split River High was built on the site of an old church in the town, originally called Stillwater. Back in 1912, the town redirected the river—which led to the name change—to irrigate local farms. Unfortunately, this caused a flood that destroyed the church and tragically killed nine people: eight children and one adult.
This section details what Simon and his friends discovered while exploring the underwater scar near Mr. and Mrs. Martin’s property. The hands that pulled Mr. Martin and Wally under the water likely belong to the children who drowned there. The sequence culminates in Simon encountering an elderly man—the only adult who perished in the flood. These spirits are referred to as “The Forgotten,” and it appears the school grounds retain a memory of the tragedy that took their lives.
The ‘Stone Tape’ idea suggests that the ghosts are stuck because the campus somehow holds onto their memories. This might also explain the unusually high number of deaths that have occurred there. It’s possible that those who died – ‘The Forgotten’ – keep the pain of their experiences alive by making the school relive them, with each new incident mirroring the original tragedy.
Mr. Martin previously admitted he unintentionally caused the bus crash that killed Quinn and her bandmates. He explained he entered a strange mark within the church and was thrown onto the road while escaping. It’s unknown how the bus driver saw him, but because all the ghostly marks seem linked, it’s possible their deaths are also somehow connected to the church.
Split River High’s Tragic History Could Explain School Spirits’ Longest-Running Plot Hole
Before the start of Season 3, almost no one seemed to notice or question the unusually high number of deaths at Split River High. It’s strange, considering viewers had been curious about this since the very beginning of the show. Now, though, Dr. Deborah Hunter-Price is the first character to finally bring up this important issue.
In Season 3, Episode 1 of School Spirits, titled “It’s a Wonderful Afterlife,” the district superintendent brought up a problem that ultimately led to the decision to close Split River High and build a new school elsewhere. Nicole learned that Deborah intends to construct a high-rise building on the old school grounds and has surveillance cameras throughout the campus. While Deborah might simply be driven by profit or a desire for control, her detailed knowledge of the school’s tragic past hints at a potentially darker motive.
I’ve been looking into the tragedies at Split River High, and it’s strange. Aside from Mr. South, it seems like only those directly connected to the students who died – family or close friends – are the ones who remember them. But Deborah? The ghosts don’t seem to recognize her at all, which is really odd. Considering how many cameras she has set up right where those students died, I can’t help but think she knows a lot more about what’s going on with these supernatural events than she’s telling anyone. It’s like she’s deliberately keeping something hidden.
As a total cinema devotee, I’m really worried about what’s happening! If Deborah manages to demolish Split River High, it could mean the ghosts there are lost forever, becoming part of ‘The Forgotten.’ It’s already tough because the school has so many new students all the time, and people are forgetting the history. But actually destroying the place where they died? That feels like it would erase their memories completely, and the land itself would be stuck reliving their deaths, just like it still remembers the church flood. I’m really hoping Maddie and her friends can figure out a way to stop Deborah before it’s too late for everyone.
