He-Man first appeared as a toy and on TV over 40 years ago, and the franchise remains popular today. Amazon MGM Studios recently released a trailer for a new live-action movie. While Prince Adam and his friends have been featured in several animated series and one previous live-action film over the years, his twin sister, Adora, hasn’t received the same attention.
While She-Ra: Princess of Power was on TV at the same time as He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Adora, the main character, only appeared briefly in other shows after her series ended. She didn’t get her own show again until She-Ra and the Princesses of Power came to Netflix in 2018. With a new Masters of the Universe series coming soon, it’s a great time to watch Princesses of Power – but you’ll need to hurry, as Netflix is removing the show on February 20th.
Princesses of Power Reimagined She-Ra For a New Generation
Okay, let’s talk about She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. What really struck me was how different it was from the original cartoon. That show was very ‘monster of the week,’ but this new version built a really compelling, ongoing story over its five seasons. It smartly started Adora’s journey similar to her introduction in the He-Man and She-Ra movie – as someone within the Evil Horde. But the series quickly showed us what the Horde was really about, and Adora made a powerful choice to switch sides and join a group of rebels fighting for freedom. It wasn’t just about defeating a new villain each week; it was about a full-blown rebellion, and that made all the difference.
Several of Adora’s former friends within the Horde felt incredibly hurt by her decision, especially Catra, who became the primary villain for the first few seasons. The show’s style and feel were similar to Avatar: The Last Airbender, mixing lighthearted action and comedy with surprisingly moving and heartfelt stories. The complex relationships between characters were central to the series, making the conflict more than just a battle between good and evil.
The initial announcement of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power faced some criticism, but those concerns were quickly overshadowed by positive reviews when the show premiered. It currently holds a 96% approval rating from critics and an 84% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and even won a Daytime Emmy Award in 2020. That’s why it’s so disappointing that Netflix has decided to cancel it.
Unlike some shows Netflix cancels on its own, Princesses of Power is leaving because Netflix’s contract with DreamWorks Animation—the show’s creator—has ended. Several other DreamWorks series have already been removed or will be soon. Because NBCUniversal now owns DreamWorks, fans are hoping these shows will move to Peacock, NBC’s streaming service, instead of disappearing completely, but there’s been no official confirmation of this yet.
Could She-Ra Appear in the Masters of the Universe Film?
After the original He-Man and She-Ra cartoons ended, legal complications kept the characters from appearing together in new stories. While Mattel owns the rights to create toys for both He-Man and She-Ra, they only have the rights to produce He-Man films and TV shows. The rights to create She-Ra content for film and television originally belonged to the animation studio Filmation, and were later transferred to DreamWorks.
However, the legal rights surrounding some characters are a bit unclear, particularly with Princesses of Power and the 2021 series Masters of the Universe: Revelations. The latter also featured Despara, a masked warrior who is typically known as the villainous alternate identity of Adora.
Even though each company still owns its characters, it might become simpler to create shared projects in the future. Amazon is not only releasing the new Masters of the Universe movie in the US and Canada, but is also working with DreamWorks on a production. This combined involvement could help Mattel and DreamWorks agree to let their characters appear together in movies and TV shows.
Shared universes have become incredibly popular recently, which is why it’s great to see He-Man and She-Ra together again. If you want to follow Adora’s story, be sure to watch Princesses of Power before it’s no longer available.
