Be warned – this article reveals major spoilers from the season 4 finale of Netflix’s The Lincoln Lawyer! Cobie Smulders appears in a surprising scene at the end of the season, and her arrival will have a big impact on what happens in season 5.
The fourth season of The Lincoln Lawyer welcomed several new actors, including Constance Zimmer, Kyle Richards, and Sasha Alexander. But the biggest surprise casting wasn’t revealed until the very end – fans were shocked to see Cobie Smulders (from How I Met Your Mother) appear in a major plot twist.
The season 4 finale of The Lincoln Lawyer ends with Cobie Smulders appearing as an enigmatic woman who spots Mickey at a grocery store. She follows him to the parking lot and asks if he is who she thinks he is. Just then, someone shoots at Mickey, and Smulders helps him find cover. Once they’re safe, her character is revealed to be Mickey’s sister, and the episode ends abruptly.

Ted Humphrey, co-showrunner and co-creator of The Lincoln Lawyer, recently spoke with ScreenRant‘s Jordan Williams about the surprising reveal that Cobie Smulders’ character is Mickey Haller’s sister. Humphrey explained that her arrival will deeply impact the show’s close-knit group of characters. He described Smulders’ character as a “free radical” – an unexpected element designed to force Mickey to re-evaluate his own identity. He added that this personal twist was a natural progression, as Mickey is often caught off guard in his professional life, and it provided a chance to challenge him on a more personal level.
ScreenRant praised Cobie Smulders’ brief but impactful appearance as Mickey’s sister in the final scene, noting her immediate intensity. They expressed interest in learning more about the decision to cast her and the significance of her world-altering role.
Ted Humphrey believes the recent storyline has been truly transformative. He explains they felt it was the right time to explore a character’s journey of redemption, showing how success went to his head, and how facing accusations of murder forced him to fight for his life and freedom. Now that he’s overcome those challenges, the story will focus on him reflecting on who he is now and what he wants from life, and how these experiences have changed him.
Then, unexpectedly, a new element entered the scene. We wanted to approach the story from a personal perspective, focusing on the impact on an individual rather than just another crime. We’ve seen plenty of crime stories, so we aimed to really challenge this character, not just professionally, but on a deeply personal level, forcing him to re-evaluate his identity and beliefs.
For the shocking ending to the newest Lincoln Lawyer story, the creator, Humphrey, decided to move away from the usual plot of Mickey Haller facing a problem at work. Instead, this season’s cliffhanger involves Mickey discovering a previously unknown family member.
Netflix has renewed The Lincoln Lawyer for a fifth season, meaning the shocking cliffhanger from the last episode will be resolved, and the mystery surrounding Cobie Smulders’ character will be revealed. The final moments of the season established the main storyline for the next season: Smulders’ character is Mickey Haller’s sister. According to creator Ted Humphrey, this revelation will be a huge surprise for all the characters, and the new season will explore how they react. It will also explain why Smulders’ character has appeared in Mickey’s life now.
This revelation will be incredibly shocking, not just for the individual involved, but for everyone connected to him – his former wives, his daughter, and the whole team. How will this fundamentally change the group’s dynamics, considering it strikes at the core of who he is and his family relationships, and what ripple effects will it have on the team as a whole?
I believe everyone will be completely surprised by this development, and the interesting part will be seeing how each character, including Mickey, handles it. The initial questions will be: who is this woman, and is she being truthful? If so, what are the implications? And why is she revealing this now, at this particular moment? There’s a specific reason for the timing, and that will be key to understanding the whole story and how we move forward with season five.
After the shocking ending of The Lincoln Lawyer season 4, Mickey needs to determine if Smulders’ character is actually telling the truth about their family connection. The show suggests she could be Mickey Haller Sr.’s daughter – a half-sister Mickey never knew existed. Before anything else, Mickey has to confirm whether she’s truly his sister, and then figure out why she kept herself hidden for so long and why she chose to contact him now.
Fans of Michael Connelly’s Mickey Haller books – which the Netflix show is based on – won’t be surprised to learn Mickey has a sibling. In the novels, Mickey develops a close relationship with his half-brother, Harry Bosch, a detective created by Connelly. However, a rights issue prevents the two brothers from appearing in the same shows: Amazon owns the rights to Harry Bosch (played by Titus Welliver in Bosch, Bosch Legacy, and Ballard on Prime Video), while Netflix owns the rights to Mickey Haller, keeping them separate on different streaming platforms.
For the first three seasons of The Lincoln Lawyer, it didn’t seem like Harry Bosch or anyone similar would ever show up. However, the creator has hinted that the show was intentionally building towards a personal connection for Mickey Haller – a family member with a background like Harry Bosch from the novels.
Cobie Smulders won’t simply be filling in for Harry Bosch in season 5 of The Lincoln Lawyer. Her character allows the show to explore storylines between Mickey Haller and Bosch, drawn from the books, that couldn’t be directly adapted for Netflix. While The Lincoln Lawyer has previously used characters like Cisco or Detective Griggs to cover Bosch’s role, showrunner Ted Humphrey explained that some of Mickey’s storylines need a closer personal connection, and that’s where Smulders’ character, as Mickey’s sibling, comes into play.
We’re in a special situation. The world of Harry Bosch is almost a reflection of our own show, because the characters in the books are connected, but on TV, they can’t be due to being on different networks.
As a fan, I’ve noticed throughout the Bosch series that the creators are really good at introducing new characters when someone steps away. We saw that with Detective Griggs in season one – she was fantastic, and I really hope they find a way to bring her back! But they’ve also realized that some stories need someone really close to the action, someone on the inside. It wasn’t just about replacing a character, it was about using that established framework to tell completely new stories, which is exciting to me.
Instead of trying to be a copy of Harry Bosch, the character played by Smulders in season 5 of The Lincoln Lawyer will explore fresh storylines. The show will build on the established relationship between Mickey Haller and Harry Bosch from the books, using it as a foundation. The Netflix series has often made changes from the original novels, and this approach – keeping the core dynamic while adding new conflicts and stories – is consistent with how the showrunners have adapted Michael Connelly’s work in the past.
