Spoilers for Wonder Man are below!
Recently, some Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies haven’t performed as well as expected at the box office, with films like Captain America: Brave New World, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and The Marvels receiving criticism. Some plot decisions, such as the reveal that Rhodey was a Skrull in Secret Invasion and Ant-Man’s surprisingly easy victory over Kang, have also frustrated fans. However, none of these recent choices have caused as much disagreement among viewers as a surprising villain twist from 2013.
Many Marvel Cinematic Universe villains haven’t quite measured up to their versions in the comics. Fans were disappointed with characters like Taskmaster and Gorr the God Butcher, who either felt different from their comic book origins or weren’t as threatening as they should have been. However, the biggest letdown for many was the twist surrounding the Mandarin in Iron Man 3. While that reveal became a famously surprising moment in the MCU, the Wonder Man series has now, after 13 years, addressed the issue and aimed to correct it.
A Cheap Twist Ruined Iron Man’s Best Villain

Marvel Studios/Disney
The Mandarin is considered one of the greatest villains in comic books, not just for Iron Man, but across the Marvel Universe. He was a strong foil to Tony Stark, often using magic and mystical powers instead of technology. This made him a perfect match for Iron Man, as the Mandarin’s intelligence and cunning were equal to Tony’s own. Just as the Joker is Batman’s most iconic enemy, many Marvel fans view the Mandarin and Iron Man as bitter rivals. So, when the character appeared in the trailers for Iron Man 3, fans were thrilled.
Following the massive success of The Avengers, Iron Man 3 was the first film to focus solely on one hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Even before it came out, the movie generated a lot of excitement, especially with teasers hinting at Sir Ben Kingsley’s portrayal of the Mandarin. The trailers presented him as a truly dangerous terrorist, making audiences believe the villain would be a major threat in his first live-action appearance. Although some fans later questioned whether Kingsley was the right choice for the character’s background, the initial trailers effectively built up the Mandarin as a formidable enemy in Iron Man 3.
The movie created a lot of excitement leading up to the reveal of the Mandarin, with Kingsley’s character making grand threats. However, this ultimately hurt the film creatively. The twist that Kingsley wasn’t the real Mandarin – he was just an actor named Trevor Slattery hired by the actual villain, Aldrich Killian – was a fun surprise for general audiences. But it disappointed many comic book fans who felt it disrespected the character. Despite this, the movie was still a huge financial success.
‘Shang-Chi’ Attempted To Fix the Mistake

Marvel Studios
Marvel listened to fan complaints and tried to address them with the movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The film introduces Xu Wenwu, played by Tony Leung, who is considered the true Mandarin within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Wenwu’s story closely follows the comic book version of the character, offering a more accurate portrayal. Despite these improvements, some issues remain: Ben Kingsley’s previous depiction damaged the Mandarin’s reputation, Wenwu never battled Iron Man, and many viewers aren’t aware that Wenwu is actually the well-known villain.
After the release of Shang-Chi, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige reaffirmed his support for the surprising plot twist in Iron Man 3, while also acknowledging that the Shang-Chi film was designed to fully explore and honor its main character. Feige explained:
We always knew we only wanted to adapt this character for film when we could truly do it justice and explore all its layers. We felt an Iron Man movie wasn’t the right place, because those films focus on Iron Man and Tony Stark. That’s why Iron Man 3 director Shane Black came up with the clever idea of Trevor Slattery in his script – a twist we still love. While that portrayal wasn’t the complete story, it established that a leader of the Ten Rings organization existed, and we finally meet that person in Shang-Chi.
‘Wonder Man’ Finally Redeems ‘Iron Man 3’s Blunder

Disney+
The popular franchise recently tried to redeem a previous mistake with the show Wonder Man. It turned a running gag involving the character Kingsley into a surprisingly heartfelt story, which critics and viewers have loved. The show uniquely explores Simon’s journey as an actor who becomes a superhero while learning to control his abilities. It also brings back Kingsley as Trevor, giving his character a purpose beyond just being a joke. Throughout the series, Trevor and Simon become friends, but Trevor is secretly forced to spy on Simon. He keeps this a secret until late in the show, when Simon discovers the truth, causing him to lose control of his powers and trigger an explosion on set.

Simon fears he’ll be arrested and lose everything, but Trevor sees a chance to make things right. To protect his friend, Trevor unexpectedly revives his persona as the Mandarin, claiming responsibility for an explosion to clear Simon’s name. This move allowed the Marvel Cinematic Universe to establish the Mandarin as a genuine villain while simultaneously acknowledging and reversing the previous reveal that the character was a fake. Though Trevor ended up in prison, he embraced the role fully and found redemption, seeing it as a way to atone for his past mistakes – and the audience responded to the newly established villain as well.
Following the events of Shang-Chi, Wonder Man provided a remarkable redemption arc for Ben Kingsley’s Trevor Slattery. This was particularly satisfying considering his character began with one of the most criticized plot twists in Marvel movie history. After 13 years, the reveal of the fake Mandarin transformed from a source of ridicule into a genuinely moving moment for fans. While it’s uncertain if Trevor will return to the MCU, his story feels fully realized, with the series offering a sort of apology to audiences as it concluded.
