Ridley Scott’s sci-fi show, Raised by Wolves, was cancelled after just two seasons, but it really deserved a longer run. While he’s famous for directing blockbuster films, Ridley Scott’s work in television is often forgotten. He’s created many iconic movies, so that’s understandable, but his TV contributions shouldn’t be overlooked.
He’s also had a successful career in television. He’s produced several well-known series, including Numbers, The Man in the High Castle, The Good Fight, The Terror, Dope Thief, and Alien: Earth. In 2020, he both produced and directed Raised by Wolves, a sci-fi show on HBO that deserves more recognition.
What Is Raised By Wolves About?
The HBO Max series Raised by Wolves began in 2020 and follows two androids, Mother (played by Amanda Collin) and Father (played by Abubakar Salim). After a devastating war wipes out Earth – a conflict rooted in the divide between religious and non-religious groups – Mother and Father are tasked with raising human children.
Mother and Father, determined to prevent another war, try to raise their children without any religious beliefs. But their plan doesn’t go as expected, and their children start to wonder if the androids who rule them are truly all-powerful, causing problems for Mother and Father’s carefully laid plans.
How Involved Ridley Scott Was With Raised By Wolves
Ridley Scott is an executive producer on Raised by Wolves and also directed its first two episodes. His company, Scott Free Productions, is one of the production companies behind the show, and Aaron Guzikowski created the series.
Though Ridley Scott didn’t create Raised by Wolves, his impact is clear throughout the series. The show heavily explores ideas about religion, the lack of belief in god, and artificial life – themes central to his Alien films, especially Prometheus. The first two episodes clearly showcase his distinctive visual style, and that same look and feel continues for the show’s entire run.
HBO Max Failed Raised By Wolves
The sci-fi series Raised by Wolves received positive reviews, with a 75% score for its first season and an 86% for its second on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite this improvement, the show was unexpectedly cancelled in June 2022, shortly after the second season finished airing. Some, like Salim, believe the cancellation was a result of the merger between Discovery and WarnerMedia.
The merger probably involved a lot of changes, but it seems like HBO Max unexpectedly decided to remove Raised by Wolves. To make matters worse, they took it off their streaming service in December 2022, meaning you now have to purchase it on Amazon if you want to watch it.
