It’s noteworthy that Sheriff Country has achieved something rare on television, surpassing Fire Country in this regard. Three years after the debut of Fire Country, starring Max Thieriot, CBS decided to expand that world for the 2025-2026 season. While Sheriff Country uses the familiar formula of a network police show, it distinguishes itself by being set in a small town, creating a more personal and close-knit feel.
Starring Morena Baccarin as Mickey, the step-sister of Sharon, Sheriff Country is set in the same area as Fire Country. It was a daring move for CBS to launch a spinoff so quickly, but it showed their confidence in the original series and its potential to expand into a larger franchise. That risk has now proven successful, as Sheriff Country is achieving its goals.
Sheriff Country Is Doing Better In Ratings Than Fire Country
Similar to Fire Country, Sheriff Country features a complex personal life for its main character. Sheriff Mickey not only leads her town, but also navigates challenging relationships with her father, a former convict, and her teenage daughter. Because of this shared universe, characters have appeared in both shows, mainly to help Sheriff Country find its footing. Surprisingly, Sheriff Country has actually performed better in ratings compared to Fire Country so far.
Although Fire Country is averaging 3.7 million weekly viewers, Sheriff Country is drawing in around 4.9 million (according to TV Series Finale, 2). This difference is notable because spinoff shows typically perform lower than their original series. Established shows usually have a solid fanbase after a few seasons, making expansion logical. Spinoffs, however, face the challenge of building an audience within an existing world while still offering a fresh perspective.
I think it’s important to remember that CBS didn’t really have a lot of time to build up Sheriff Country before it launched. They introduced Mickey in season 2 of Fire Country and had him pop up in a few episodes after that. That was pretty much it for setting things up before the spinoff started in 2025. But honestly, it worked! People were instantly drawn in and started watching right away.
Why Fire Country Season 4 Is Dropping In Ratings
CBS (via MoviesStillsDb)
The popularity of Sheriff Country is likely due to its engaging story and memorable characters. It also benefited from launching at a challenging time for Fire Country season 4, which had just lost two of its original stars – Billy Burke (Vince) and Stephanie Arcila (Gabriela) – at the beginning of the year. These characters had been with the show since its very start.
The exits of two characters were meant to revitalize Fire Country, but the decision received criticism, particularly because writing out both characters simultaneously felt excessive. Vince died tragically during a rescue attempt in season three, and Gabriela left seeking a new beginning. As the show establishes its direction, Fire Country seems to be struggling to define its own identity.
