Whether you grew up with the Muppets or not, the new ABC special, The Muppet Show, is bound to bring a smile to your face. The Muppets have a special kind of nostalgia – they appeal to all ages, offering humor that works for kids and adults alike. They’re truly entertainment for everyone.
The Muppets are intentionally silly—that’s what makes them fun! These puppets, with their larger-than-life personalities, are designed to make us laugh. Whether it was their first TV appearances or the more modern versions we see today, the Muppets have consistently brought joy through the years, even as times and creators have changed.
Even though the Muppets still capture some of Jim Henson’s original charm, today’s versions are naturally different from the classics. They’ve evolved with updated voices, a new sense of humor, and sometimes lean more on familiar memories than groundbreaking ideas. But the recent special on ABC is a welcome change – it’s a positive evolution for the Muppets.
The Muppet Show special, premiering February 4th at 8 p.m. Eastern on ABC, is a delightful and nostalgic return to the classic variety show format, but with a modern twist. It’s full of energy and immediately establishes its unique identity. While it’s already a bold effort, there’s potential for even more, and I hope ABC renews it for future seasons.
The Familiarity Of The Muppet Show Keeps It Running Smoothly

While fewer people may be familiar with The Muppet Show today than in the past, the Muppets remain well-known characters. This existing familiarity helps the show continue, and this new episode—hopefully the first of many—quickly immerses viewers in the action with a blend of on-stage performances and behind-the-scenes glimpses.
I’m so excited about The Muppet Show coming to Disney+! I know it’s been a while since the Muppets had a big series – that 2015-2016 show feels like ages ago – and I was a little worried new viewers might not ‘get’ it. But honestly, the show is so easy to jump into. The format is classic, and even if you don’t know Kermit and Miss Piggy super well, you’ll quickly feel right at home in their world. It’s just pure fun!
The Muppet Show Blends Comedy & Music In A Thoughtful Way

This special, and hopefully the start of a new series of The Muppet Show, successfully combines music and comedy throughout each segment, creating a cohesive and entertaining experience. It stays true to the classic variety show format while still maintaining its signature playful and self-aware humor.
When watching The Muppet Show, we’re not meant to question that it’s a show within a show – puppets putting on a variety show for us. Instead, the show asks us to simply enjoy it. The music is key to maintaining that easygoing feeling, and even though some sketches move a little slowly, they’re consistently funny enough to work on their own.
The Muppet Show’s Use Of Special Guest Star Sabrina Carpenter Helps It Shine
As a fan of Sabrina Carpenter, I was curious to see how her mature comedic style would blend with the classic Muppets. Luckily, Carpenter is fantastic on screen, particularly when interacting with Miss Piggy—who might even be considering a lawsuit for impersonation! Ultimately, her humor complements the Muppets’ playful antics perfectly.
As the special went on, it was fun seeing Seth Rogen and Maya Rudolph make little appearances, but honestly, what really made it work was Bill Hader’s consistent performance – it totally reminded me of the original Muppet Show from the 70s! The Muppets are always great on their own, but having Hader involved just added this amazing classic, yet fresh, energy to everything. It really made the whole thing shine.
