Hamilton didn’t ask any further questions and casually joked about wiping out New Jersey, saying it was just a normal thing to do, before quickly moving on to a different topic.

Ever since the announcement of Doomsday, audiences have anticipated huge, destructive action and expected some heroes wouldn’t make it. Ian McKellen accidentally revealed a specific location related to the film, and now fans are wondering why Magneto would target New Jersey in particular, sparking new theories and discussions.

New Jersey in the MCU

The trailer for the upcoming X-Men film, Doomsday, shows Magneto and Professor X (played by Sir Patrick Stewart) together at Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters in upstate New York. We also see a quick shot of Scott Summers, also known as Cyclops (James Marsden), using his powerful optic blasts while clearly upset.

There’s been talk that Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., might be in control of the Sentinels, robots usually seen as enemies of the X-Men. Some believe this could lead to a battle near the Xavier Institute that causes widespread damage, potentially affecting an entire state. However, this is just one possibility being discussed.

Fans have pointed out that the Disney+ series WandaVision, which aired in 2021, took place in Westview, New Jersey. Because Wanda Maximoff (also known as The Scarlet Witch) was originally portrayed as Magneto’s daughter in the comic books, some believe that Ian McKellen’s character might be searching for her and could become part of a larger conflict. While Elizabeth Olsen has stated she isn’t currently involved in Doomsday, she has expressed interest in reprising her role as Wanda in the future.

Because the upcoming Doomsday story will involve multiple universes, the connection between Magneto and Wanda might be different than before. If Ian McKellen’s version of Magneto appears in Westview and clashes with Wanda or the Avengers, the resulting battle could level the entire state of New Jersey.

New Jersey has only appeared once before in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as the home of Kamala Khan, also known as Ms. Marvel. The series Ms. Marvel revealed she has the mutant gene, which could be why Magneto might search for her. However, like Elizabeth Olsen, Iman Vellani (who plays Ms. Marvel) hasn’t been confirmed to be in the upcoming Doomsday movie.

More than figuring out how it happens, the important thing is that Magneto will play a significant role in the Doomsday storyline. Given the large number of characters involved, many fans worried that some wouldn’t have much to do, but Magneto will be a key player.

Magneto’s History of Destruction

Throughout the X-Men films, which have been made over twenty-five years, Magneto has famously moved huge landmarks like the Statue of Liberty, the Golden Gate Bridge, and RFK Stadium. If he were to target New Jersey, it’s hard to say what he’d destroy, but the state has several recognizable lighthouses and the historic battleship New Jersey that the filmmakers could use in a dramatic scene.

The discussion following McKellen’s comment proves fans still love the character and are excited to see what he does next. Beyond just relying on familiar memories, it suggests another grand adventure is on the way for this popular, complex hero.
