Kristof, a wealthy and unusual young man, convinces his high school friends to reunite by falsely telling them someone has died. He lures them to an old, abandoned prison once used to hold witches, where they’re forced to spend the night. During a séance with a Ouija board, they accidentally awaken three vengeful executioners from their graves. These Crypt Keepers are understandably upset and begin killing the group, with the grim promise that no one will survive. Luckily for the friends, they’re already dressed for the occasion… their own funerals.

Verdict on Prison of the Dead

Recap

The film centers around a wealthy group of friends who explore a supposedly haunted prison, hoping to investigate paranormal activity. Their investigation quickly turns into a terrifying struggle for survival against the prison’s undead inhabitants.

Best Parts

The movie centers around a simple but effective premise: a paranormal investigation that doesn’t go as planned. A constant, unsettling atmosphere is created, heightened by a fierce storm that takes place throughout the night.

Worst Parts

The movie doesn’t fully commit to its potentially intense and complex plot, and the suggestion of a zombie outbreak creates a misleading expectation. It’s unclear what the supernatural forces are actually bringing to life, and the slow start prevents the actors from truly shining. Ultimately, the pacing hinders the story’s impact.

Final ThoughtsPrison of the Dead is a largely dull horror.
