Ryan Murphy’s Kennedy Series ‘Love Story’ Gets First Trailer From FX

Ryan Murphy’s latest series, The Beauty Story, is currently airing its first season, but he’s already announced another show. Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette will tell the story of their relationship, with Paul Anthony Kelly and Sarah Pidgeon playing JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette, respectively. The nine-episode series will debut on FX and Hulu on Thursday, February 12th, with the first three episodes available that day.

John F. Kennedy Jr., born into the prominent Kennedy family, worked as a lawyer in New York City and later founded the magazine George. He was a well-known celebrity who frequently dealt with intense media attention. Carolyn Bessette was a fashionable saleswoman who became an executive at Calvin Klein. They married in 1996 and tragically died in a plane crash three years later, in 1999.

Based on Elizabeth Beller’s biography of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, this show delivers the drama, romance, and star power typical of a Ryan Murphy series. The recently released trailer focuses on the luxurious and glamorous aspects of the story. You can watch it below.

Why Is ‘Love Story’ Controversial?

Since 2016, with shows like American Crime Story, Ryan Murphy has become known for dramatizing real-life events, but his portrayals have frequently faced criticism for being overly sensational or inaccurate. The first season of his Monster series, focusing on serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, was accused of exploiting the stories of his victims – a concern voiced by some of their families. The following season, which covered the case of Erik and Lyle Menendez (convicted of murdering their parents), also drew criticism for taking liberties with the facts. Erik Menendez himself stated the show was based on “horrible and blatant lies.”

The new show Love Story is facing criticism, similar to past projects about the Kennedy family. Jack Schlossberg, nephew of John F. Kennedy Jr., recently told Deadline that his family had no involvement in the show’s creation and he’s concerned it’s exploiting a painful family tragedy for financial gain. He stated that while he appreciates admiration for his uncle, he finds profiting from it in this manner to be deeply inappropriate.

Given that director Matthew Murphy often prioritizes entertainment over strict accuracy, the new show Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette likely won’t be completely factual, but it’s still expected to be engaging. If the show does well, it could launch an entire Love Story anthology series, potentially leading to public figures’ families regularly disputing the details in each new season.
