Okay, just a heads-up: I’m about to talk about episode 3 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and I might accidentally slip up and mention things that could spoil later episodes too, so consider yourself warned!
The new series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, introduces a surprising twist: Dunk’s squire, Egg, is actually a Targaryen. This raises the question of how Egg is connected to Daenerys Targaryen. The Targaryen family has always been central to the story of Game of Thrones, starting with Daenerys in the original series and continuing in both of the current spinoffs.
Similar to House of the Dragon, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set in a period when the Targaryen family firmly controlled Westeros. The story follows Dunk around 80 years after the events of House of the Dragon and roughly 90 years before Game of Thrones, during the reign of King Daeron II Targaryen—the grandfather of the character Egg.
The Targaryen family history is famously complex, but the connection between Rhaenyra, Egg, and Daenerys is fairly straightforward. What’s particularly notable about this line of the family is that it seemed highly improbable Egg – and therefore Daenerys – would ever become rulers of Westeros.
Egg Is Daenerys Targaryen’s Great Grandfather In Game Of Thrones

The character Egg, from A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, eventually becomes King Aegon V Targaryen and is the great-grandfather of Daenerys Targaryen. His son, Jaeherys II Targaryen, is the father of Aerys II Targaryen – known as the “Mad King” – who was killed by Jaime Lannister, leading to Robert Baratheon taking the throne.
| Targaryen Family Tree Between Aegon V and Daenerys I | |
|---|---|
| Ruler | Relationship to Daenerys |
| Aegon V Targaryen (Egg) | Great-Grandfather |
| Jaeherys II Targaryen | Grandfather |
| Aerys II Targaryen | Father |
| Daenerys I Targaryen | Self |
Daenerys Targaryen’s father is the same person known as the Mad King, making her directly related to Egg. Interestingly, at the beginning of the story A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Egg is quite far from being in line to inherit the throne.
Egg’s father, Maekar, was one of King Daeron II Targaryen’s sons – specifically, his fourth. Egg himself is Maekar’s fourth son. Both Daenerys and these rulers came to power through a chain of unfortunate and violent events within the Targaryen family.
How Rhaenyra Targaryen Is Related To Egg From A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms
Be warned, the following contains potential spoilers for future seasons of House of the Dragon! The series House of the Dragon centers around a civil war between Rhaenyra Targaryen and her brother Aegon, both vying for control of the Iron Throne. Ultimately, Rhaenyra’s descendants prevail. This means Aegon V, known as Egg, is actually Rhaenyra’s great-great-great-grandson. The lineage goes like this: Rhaenyra, then Viserys II, Aegon IV, Daeron II, Maekar I, and finally, Aegon V (Egg).
| Targaryen Family Tree Between Rhaenyra I and Aegon V | |
|---|---|
| Rhaenyra I Targaryen | Three-Times Great-Grandmother |
| Viserys II Targaryen | Two-Times Great-Grandfather |
| Aegon IV Targaryen | Great-Grandfather |
| Daeron II Targaryen | Grandfather |
| Maekar I Targaryen | Father |
| Aegon V Targaryen (Egg) | Self |
If you’re following the family history, Rhaenyra is Daenerys’ very distant ancestor – many generations back. While it can be a bit complicated, the detailed family trees created by George R.R. Martin are a key part of what makes the Game of Thrones universe, including A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, so impressive.
