The God of War games feature memorable characters, so the creators of the new Amazon live-action series faced a big challenge in casting the show. While many characters are based on familiar Norse gods seen in other stories, the series needed to both stay true to the original games and offer a fresh take on these well-known figures.
Amazon officially revealed the God of War series in December 2022, but information was limited for quite some time. Fortunately, we’re now getting a better idea of what to expect. The original showrunner, Rafe Judkins (known for Wheel of Time), left the project in late 2024. Ronald D. Moore, who has worked on shows like For All Mankind and Battlestar Galactica, quickly took over, and the show has been moving forward quickly ever since.
Confirmed ‘God of War’ Cast Members
We’re learning more and more about who will play the characters in the upcoming God of War series, though some casting details are still unknown. The Amazon show will begin its story with the 2018 God of War game, which reimagined the series with Norse mythology. This allows both new and longtime fans to enjoy the show, as it’s a fresh start while still offering familiar elements. While characters from the older games could appear, the series will mostly draw from the more recent storylines.
Ryan Hurst as Kratos

FX
Ryan Hurst is well known to fans of Sons of Anarchy, where he played Harry “Opie” Winston – a role he’s revisited throughout his career. He was a key part of the show, appearing in 54 episodes from 2008 to 2012. He’s also had recurring roles in series like Bates Motel, Outsiders, and The Walking Dead. Interestingly, his work as the main character in God of War isn’t his first involvement with the franchise. He previously provided the voice and motion capture for Thor in the 2022 video game God of War: Ragnarök, a sequel to the 2018 game.
Alastair Duncan as Mimir

Sony Interactive Entertainment
Alastair Duncan, like Richard Hurst, is returning from the God of War games. However, while Hurst is playing a new character, Duncan will reprise his role as Mimir – known as the Smartest Man in the World – who was a crucial ally to Kratos in both the 2018 and 2022 games. Duncan is primarily a voice actor with a vast portfolio of animated and video game characters, making him a perfect fit for Mimir. For those unfamiliar with the games, it’s logical that he’d voice the character in the upcoming live-action series, even if Mimir’s physical appearance will be quite unique. While Duncan has voiced many characters throughout his career, Mimir is likely his most well-known role.
Danny Woodburn as Brok

Netflix
Brok is a key character in Kratos’ story, starting with the 2018 God of War game. While originally voiced by Robert Craighead, actor Richard Woodburn is a better fit for a live-action portrayal of the blue-skinned dwarf. As a skilled blacksmith, Brok keeps Kratos equipped for every battle. Though his role isn’t huge, fantasy fans might remember Woodburn as Zoltan Chivay in Season 4 of The Witcher. He’s also appeared in popular shows like Seinfeld, Angel, and Bones.
Jeff Gulka as Sindri

Sony
Sindri, Brok’s brother, is a key ally to Kratos, helping him improve and create new weapons throughout the game. The actor who plays Sindri, Gulka, has been working since 1997. He’s best known for his live-action role as Gibson Praise in The X-Files, appearing in five episodes from 1998 to 2002. He also provided voice work for 26 episodes of Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century between 1999 and 2001.
Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor

Apple TV
Magnús Ólafsson will be taking over the role of Thor from Ryan Hurst. Though this Thor, from the God of War series, is very different from Chris Hemsworth’s portrayal in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he’s considered even more intimidating. Many viewers will recognize Ólafsson from his part as Mr. Drummond in Severance, but he actually has significant experience with Norse mythology in his work. He previously provided the voice for Ragnar the Rock in the 2019 film How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.
Mandy Patinkin as Odin

Showtime
Mandy Patinkin, famous for playing Saul Berenson in Homeland, will be taking on a very different role in the God of War series. He’s also well-known for his appearances in Chicago Hope as Dr. Geiger and as Jason Gideon in Criminal Minds. Recent confirmation that Odin will be a character in Season 1 is a significant change from the original game, where Odin remains a mysterious figure in the background until the Ragnarök installment.
Max Parker as Heimdall

ITV
Before landing the role of Heimdall in God of War, Parker was largely known to audiences in Britain. His most significant role prior to that was as Luke Posner in the British soap opera Emmerdale, where he appeared in 73 episodes between 2019 and 2021. He’s also scheduled to appear as Manny in a 2025 episode of Doctor Who called “The Robot Revolution.” Considering his physique, Parker seems like a great fit for the character of Heimdall as portrayed in the God of War games.
Teresa Palmer as Sif

Sky/Bad Wolf
Honestly, I think Teresa Palmer is just fantastic, and I’ve really enjoyed following her career. Right now, she’s probably best known for playing Diana Bishop in A Discovery of Witches – she was in 25 episodes over a few years, which is a lot! But she’s done some really memorable roles, like Julie in Warm Bodies, Dorothy in Hacksaw Ridge, and more recently, Iggy Star in The Fall Guy. I’m really excited about her taking on the role of Sif in the God of War series – Sif is such a cool character in the games, and I think Palmer will bring a lot to the part when it hits TV. It feels like a perfect fit!
Expect the ‘God of War’ Cast To Grow

Sony
While the cast for the God of War TV show is coming together, we still don’t know who will play some of the most important characters. The series will mainly cover the stories from the 2018 and 2022 games, but it will also include flashbacks to Kratos’s past. This means even after all the main roles are filled, we can expect to see surprise appearances from characters throughout the entire God of War franchise.

The upcoming Amazon series seems to be missing some important actors to play key characters from the 2018 game. While some of these roles haven’t been announced yet, it’s likely we’ll hear about them soon, given how central they are to the story. It would also be unusual for the show not to heavily promote its cast, as that’s standard practice.
