Jason Statham’s latest movie didn’t attract many viewers to theaters. Box office results for its opening weekend show a disappointing performance.
The new thriller Shelter opened at number six in U.S. theaters, earning $5.5 million over the weekend. While a decent showing, it’s one of Jason Statham’s lowest box office debuts since the start of the pandemic. Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre still holds the record for his weakest opening with just $3.1 million.
Moviegoers chose to see Sam Raimi’s new horror film, Send Help, with Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien, instead. It brought in $20 million, making it the weekend’s top earner. Close behind was the indie film Iron Lung by Markiplier, which grossed $17.8 million.
The new Melania Trump biopic, Melania, from Amazon MGM Studios, earned $7 million and rounded out the top five films at the weekend box office. Meanwhile, Zootopia 2 and Avatar: Fire and Ash, which have been playing for a while, barely edged out Shelter for the fourth and fifth spots, bringing in $5.8 million and $5.5 million respectively.
Shelter Received Glowing Reviews
The movie Shelter didn’t do well in theaters, following mixed reactions from both critics and viewers. It currently has a 65% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 85 reviews.
Viewers loved the film, giving it an 87% rating on the review website. One viewer called Shelter “one of the best movies I’ve ever seen in this genre” and said it was likely Jason Statham’s best action film yet.
The film Shelter is from the director known for action movies starring Gerard Butler, including Angel Has Fallen, Greenland, Kandahar, and Greenland 2: Migration. Greenland 2 came out only three weeks before Shelter.
