Jason Statham & Sylvester Stallone’s Forgotten R-Rated Thriller That Was Almost A Rambo Movie Is About To Be Free To Stream

Jason Statham and Sylvester Stallone have collaborated on several projects over the years, and one of their films is soon being removed from streaming services.

The movie Homefront, released in 2013, is based on Chuck Logan’s novel of the same name. It stars Jason Statham as Phil Broker, a former DEA agent who leaves the agency after a tragic raid. Seeking a quieter life, Broker moves to a small town in Louisiana to be with his teenage daughter. However, trouble finds him when his daughter gets into a fight at school, drawing the attention of a dangerous local criminal.

Over 12 years after its release, the movie Homefront is now available to stream for free on several platforms. It was previously on Tubi and Prime Video, but as of February 1st, you can watch it for free on Plex, The Roku Channel, and Shout! Factory.

Released over Thanksgiving 2013, the action thriller Homefront, featuring Kate Bosworth, Winona Ryder, and James Franco, performed consistently well at the box office, earning almost $52 million despite a $22 million production cost. It achieved this success even while competing with popular films like The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Frozen. However, the film received mixed reviews from critics and earned a 42% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – marking the fifth consecutive film for the production to receive a ‘Rotten’ score.

Surprisingly, Homefront wasn’t initially planned as a close adaptation of the novel. Sylvester Stallone first imagined it as another Rambo movie. Later, as Jason Statham revealed near the film’s release, Stallone put the script aside for about ten years. He then revisited it, taking on a producer role, and brought in Gary Fleder to direct and Statham to star, as they had previously worked together on the first two Expendables films.

Stallone and Statham didn’t stop working together after Homefront. They quickly made The Expendables 3 and 4, and also collaborated, in a way, on A Working Man, which was based on the novel Levon’s Trade. Although a sequel hasn’t been confirmed, the director, David Ayer, has mentioned wanting to adapt the rest of the books in that action series.

The movie A Working Man kicked off a series featuring Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham, based on the novels by Dixon. Homefront adapted a later book in the series, focusing on Stallone’s character, Phil Broker, which makes a direct sequel to the 2013 film improbable, despite its availability on streaming platforms. Nevertheless, with The Expendables franchise planned for a revival and both actors continuing to star in action movies, there are still many chances for Stallone and Statham to work together again.
