Amazon Prime Video is doubling down on turning video games into TV shows. They recently revealed the first picture from their upcoming Tomb Raider series, giving fans a first glimpse of Sophie Turner (known for Game of Thrones) as the famous adventurer, Lara Croft.
A recently released photo from Prime Video confirms the new Lara Croft will strongly resemble her original iconic look. Alicia Turner’s costume—a green tank top, dark shorts, dual pistols, and a reddish-brown braid—is instantly familiar to longtime fans. This practical and straightforward design suggests Prime Video understands what audiences expect from a Tomb Raider series.
This announcement is the fourth big video game adaptation coming to Prime Video, adding to their growing collection that already includes Fallout, Secret Level, and Like a Dragon: Yakuza. With other popular games like God of War and Mass Effect also in the works, Amazon is making a clear push to become the leading platform for high-quality video game adaptations, and Tomb Raider could be their most ambitious project yet.
Prime Video’s Tomb Raider Series Takes Shape

Amazon MGM Studios and Crystal Dynamics officially started developing a live-action Tomb Raider series in May 2024, following initial news reported by The Hollywood Reporter in January 2023. Sophie Turner, famous for playing Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, was cast as Lara Croft in September 2025, taking on a beloved role with a huge fanbase.
The series was created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the Emmy-winning writer and actress, who also serves as an executive producer. Her involvement immediately generated excitement because she’s known for creating compelling stories with well-developed characters, and has worked on similar projects before.
The supporting cast is just as impressive as the lead. Sigourney Weaver, famous for action roles, plays Evelyn Wallis, a secretive and powerful woman who wants to take advantage of Lara’s skills. Jason Isaacs, known for playing Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter movies, will portray Lara’s scheming uncle, Atlas de Mornay. Though details about the story are being kept secret, the talented team working on the show indicates that Prime Video is planning something more complex than a typical weekly adventure series.
Everything we’ve seen so far – the actors chosen, the creative minds behind the project, and the first image released – suggests this series aims to honor the original Tomb Raider stories while also standing out among the many adaptations being made today.
Tomb Raider’s Long History on Screen

The story of Tomb Raider has been told on screen many times, and each new version is naturally compared to past ones. The franchise first appeared in live-action films in the early 2000s with Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, both starring Angelina Jolie. While critics weren’t always impressed, those movies were big action adventures that helped make Lara Croft a well-known figure in popular culture.
As a huge Tomb Raider fan, I remember when Lara Croft popped up again in 2007 with Revisioned: Tomb Raider, a cool but sadly short-lived animated series that tried some really interesting visual styles. Then, over a decade later, Warner Bros. gave us a fresh start with the 2018 Tomb Raider movie starring Alicia Vikander. That one was neat because it took cues from the more recent Survivor games, showing us a younger, less experienced Lara just beginning her adventures – a Lara who felt a lot more relatable and vulnerable.
Netflix recently added to the Tomb Raider story with the animated series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, which connects the earlier ‘Survivor’ and ‘Classic’ games. An upcoming series on Prime Video will continue to bring all the different timelines together, so the creative decisions made for the show are particularly important.
Even before releasing the Tomb Raider series, Prime Video had a consistent approach with its video game adaptations: each one was unveiled with a special preview.
Other Amazon Prime Video Gaming Adaptations
Fallout

Prime Video’s Fallout is its most popular video game adaptation yet, and it quickly became a hit by staying true to the world fans love in the games. The series takes place 200 years after a nuclear war and follows the stories of people living in underground vaults and those struggling to survive in the dangerous wasteland. They face challenges from radioactive creatures, bandits, and powerful, mysterious figures as they search for purpose and try to stay alive.
In November 2023, Prime Video released the first images from its Fallout series, and they clearly showed how closely the show follows the video game. The photos featured Ella Purnell as Lucy in her iconic vault suit, Aaron Moten as Maximus wearing Brotherhood of Steel power armor, and Walton Goggins as Cooper Howard, transformed with makeup and prosthetics to resemble the mutated ghouls from the games.
Secret Level

Secret Level stands out because it doesn’t follow one continuous story. Instead, it’s an animated anthology series that takes you into different, well-known video game worlds with each episode. Because each story is complete on its own, the show can freely explore various moods, types of stories, and art styles without being limited by a single game franchise.
The series was first previewed with a trailer at Gamescom in August 2024, highlighting its ability to explore many different styles. The trailer showed a wide range of visuals, from incredibly realistic sci-fi to colorful fantasy and unsettling horror. A particularly surprising moment featured a character who looked a lot like actor Keanu Reeves, who was later confirmed to be one of the many famous faces starring in the series.
Like a Dragon: Yakuza

Based on the popular Sega video game series, Like a Dragon: Yakuza is a realistic and character-focused look at Tokyo’s criminal world. The show follows Kazuma Kiryu, played by Ryoma Takeuchi, as he navigates the dangerous life of the yakuza, struggling with his loyalty, the use of violence, and the strict rules of the organization.
The trailer and promotional materials for the July 2024 release emphasized a strong contrast in Kiryu’s character. They showed him both with his tattoos and bare-chested, and sharply contrasted that with scenes of him in a suit and armed with a gun, really showcasing his dual nature.
