I was really excited to see the first scores come in for Kaley Cuoco’s new movie, Vanished, on Rotten Tomatoes! It looks like a twisty thriller where she plays Alice Munroe, an archaeologist whose boyfriend, Tom, disappears on a train trip to Marseille. As she digs deeper to find him, things get complicated – she starts to uncover some seriously shady stuff, and it looks like her search might actually ruin their relationship. But she’s not giving up – she’s determined to find out what really happened to Tom.
Kaley Cuoco is known for her work on shows like the Emmy-nominated The Flight Attendant and the recently cancelled Based on a True Story. Her new series, Vanished, marks a shift in her career. While she’s often played comedic roles, Vanished is a darker, more suspenseful drama where her character finds herself in a very dangerous and quickly unfolding situation.
The first reviews for the movie Vanished came out early Friday, January 30th, and Rotten Tomatoes has now tallied the initial scores. As of right now, Vanished has an 83% rating from critics, based on six reviews.
Critics gave five positive reviews and one negative review to Vanished. Its initial Tomatometer score is between those of The Flight Attendant (91%) and Based on a True Story (78%). The score could change as more reviews come in, but the first episode of this MGM+ limited series is set to launch later this weekend.
Critics generally praise Kaley Cuoco’s performance as the lead in Vanished, noting that her strong acting and the show’s fast pace keep the story engaging. As critic Brittany Frederick observed, Cuoco delivers a performance reminiscent of her Emmy-nominated work in The Flight Attendant, driving the plot forward with her determined and witty character.
Richard Roeper of RogertEbert.com compared Vanished to thrillers from the late 1960s and early 1970s, describing it as a well-crafted mystery that unfolds quickly in just four episodes packed with plot twists.
However, several critics found problems with the storyline. The Los Angeles Times felt Vanished was lacking in both excitement and tension, and CBR described the central idea as weak. Our own review at ScreenRant pointed out the show also needs a more engaging or frightening antagonist.
Kaley Cuoco and Sam Claflin are joined in Vanished by a talented cast. Karin Viard (known from The Bélier Family) plays Hélène, a journalist who assists in the search for Tom, though her own reasons for helping are unclear. Matthias Schweighöfer (Oppenheimer) appears as Alex, a charitable colleague of Tom’s, while Simon Abkarian (Casino Royale) plays the stern Inspector Drax. Dar Zuzovsky (The Saints) rounds out the cast as another of Tom’s colleagues who is keeping secrets.
I’m really curious to see what regular viewers will make of “Vanished.” But honestly, with the early scores on Rotten Tomatoes, it looks like Kaley Cuoco and Sam Claflin might have another big hit on their hands – they’ve both been in so many popular things lately!
The new series, Vanished, will debut on MGM+ on February 1st in the US, Spain, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, and throughout Latin America. New episodes will be released every Sunday until February 22nd. Viewers in the UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand will have access to the entire season on Prime Video starting February 27th.
