Summoner Wars has become a popular card game since its debut in 2009, and the second edition in 2021 was highly praised. Now, the fantasy game is expanding its story into the world of comics, focusing on the realm of Itharia.
We’re excited to share that Battle Quest Comics will be publishing a comic series based on the popular Summoner Wars game, created in partnership with Plaid Hat Games. The comic will be written by Paul Cornell and Justin Zimmerman, feature artwork by Patrick Macchi and coloring by Mo Hollowell, and is based on a story developed by Plaid Hat Games. Covers will be created by Martin Abel of Plaid Hat. Fans can expect to find the new comic in stores this fall.
Summoner Wars Is Getting Its First Comic Series
If you’re new to Summoner Wars, it’s a card game where you build a deck around different factions, each with its own unique way to play. While building a strong deck is important, winning also requires smart positioning and movement on the game board – mastering the layout is key!
The game, aptly named, centers on a long-lasting war within the fantasy realm of Itharia. A new comic from Plaid Hat Games will likely explore the same themes and story. Battle Quest Comics appears to be an ideal publisher for this project, given their established focus on similar content, as seen in titles like No’madd: The Unconquerable and Steel Siege. This announcement comes on the heels of news that Battle Quest will also be expanding its distribution to bookstores this month.
Battle Quest Promises A Classic Comic Experience
Details about the new comic are still limited, but the creator says it will be a unique story, focusing on the narrative itself rather than just setting up bigger events. He promises every page will be incredibly impressive. This approach is a welcome change, as many superhero comics today feel like small parts of a much larger, ongoing storyline.
As a fan, I was really excited to hear that Cornell is having a blast writing the dialogue – especially for all the wonderfully weird characters in this world! And the covers totally nail the vibe. They’ve got that same expressive, energetic style as the card game art – it feels like something straight out of a Saturday morning cartoon, which is perfect!
The comic book adaptation of Summoner Wars will have its release date revealed during the ComicsPRO Annual Meeting in February. Until then, Summoner Wars fans can be excited knowing a comic is coming, and anyone who enjoys fantasy comics should watch for announcements.
