Warner Bros. announced a new adaptation back in April 2023, and it’s now almost here.
HBO has announced that its new series will premiere in early 2027. The news came from Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content, on January 30th.
Casey Bloys stated they’re aiming for a 2027 release, and clarified that means the beginning of the year. While he wouldn’t commit to a specific month – like January, February, March, or April – he reiterated that the target is early 2027.
Filming for the show began in the summer of 2025, and it was originally planned to launch between 2026 and 2027.
In September 2024, HBO’s Casey Bloys mentioned to Deadline that the show could potentially premiere between late 2026 and 2027. However, he also noted that writing had just begun, making it too early to confirm a release date.
After being announced in April 2023, the show’s development faced some initial delays. The creators first needed to find a writer and showrunner, and in 2024, Francesca Gardiner, known for her work on Succession, was chosen for the role. Mark Mylod, who also worked on Succession, is set to direct multiple episodes.
Submissions are being accepted until October 31, 2024 – a date significant to Harry Potter fans as it’s the anniversary of the night Voldemort attempted to kill Harry as a baby.
Casting announcements began in 2025, and by late May, the main roles had been filled. Dominic McLaughlin was cast as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.
