Markiplier’s Iron Lung Film Surpasses $3.5 Million at Box Office

Markiplier’s first movie, based on the video game Iron Lung, is proving to be a big hit! It earned over $3.5 million from preview showings on Thursday night, surpassing the opening numbers of Sam Raimi’s latest film.

The new film performed better than Sam Raimi’s Send Help, which earned about $2.2 million from early screenings. Plus, Iron Lung had $6 million in ticket pre-sales, suggesting it could make around $10 million in its opening weekend.

The movie Iron Lung was made with a very small budget – less than $3 million. Almost no money was spent on traditional advertising; instead, the director, Fischbach, largely promoted the film himself through social media.

The film, announced in 2023, follows players controlling a tiny submarine as they journey through an ocean made of blood. Writer, director, editor, star, and primary financier, T.J. Fischbach, took on multiple roles in bringing the project to life.

In addition to Fischbach, who plays a prisoner named Simon, the film Iron Lung includes performances by Caroline Rose Kaplan, Troy Baker, Elle LaMont, Seán McLoughlin, Alanah Pierce, Rachell Hofstetter, Nahul Kohli, Elsie Lovelock, David Pettitt, Holt Boggs, Mick Lauer, and the game’s creator, David Szymanski. Isaac McKee also stars as a younger version of Simon.

The stars and planets vanished, leaving only those in space stations or starships to witness what they called The Quiet Rapture. After years of decline and failing systems, the Consolidation of Iron found something shocking on the desolate moon AT-5: a vast ocean of blood.

Driven by the urgent need for resources, they quickly began a mission. They built a submarine and sealed a prisoner inside. The front window was reinforced with metal to withstand the immense pressure and depth of the ocean. Success would mean freedom for the prisoner, but failure would result in another being sent. This was their thirteenth attempt.

What Do Critics and Audiences Think of Markiplier’s Iron Lung Movie?

Viewers, especially those who played the original game, have really loved Iron Lung. However, professional critics haven’t been as enthusiastic. Currently, on Rotten Tomatoes, the audience score is a very high 93%, based on over 100 reviews from verified viewers.

Although Iron Lung doesn’t have enough reviews yet to get a Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes, the few reviews it has received are mostly average. Critics acknowledge the film’s ambition and the strong work of director and star Harrison Fischbach, but also point out that the pacing is slow and the movie can be dull.
