Despite a disappointing performance in movie theaters, the dark fantasy comedy horror film Death of a Unicorn, starring Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd, is now a hit on HBO Max. The film, released last year, has attracted a large audience on the streaming service and is performing well in viewership charts. While critics had mixed reactions when it first came out, it’s found success with viewers on HBO Max.
Death of a Unicorn finds an audience on HBO Max
As of January 30, 2026, Jenna Ortega’s horror comedy, Death of a Unicorn, is currently the 5th most popular movie on HBO Max, according to the streaming data site FlixPatrol. The film is also performing very well in South America, ranking among the top three most-watched movies in countries like Argentina, Chile, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, and Mexico.
This film didn’t perform as well as several others this awards season. It came in behind Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan’s Sinners (ranked #1 with a record 16 nominations), Leonardo DiCaprio’s One Battle After Another (#2), 33 Photos from the Ghetto (#3), and Lucy starring Scarlett Johansson (#4). However, it did better than Legion (#6), Blink Twice (#7), Alien: Romulus (#8), Blackhat (#9), and Fighting (#10).
After its release, Death of a Unicorn earned approximately $16.4 million worldwide, slightly exceeding its $15 million production budget.
The film has received mixed reviews. While critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave it a score of 52%, audiences enjoyed it more, giving it a 76% rating. Metacritic assigned the film a score of 51 from critics and a user score of 5.6, indicating generally average or mixed reactions.
The movie centers on Elliot and his daughter Ridley, who travel to the luxurious estate of Elliot’s wealthy employer in the Canadian Rockies for a weekend getaway. Their trip takes a strange turn when they accidentally hit and kill a unicorn, and Elliot’s boss decides he wants to use the unicorn’s remains for his own purposes.
Alex Scharfman was the writer and director of the film. He collaborated with Theresa Steele Page, Lars Knudsen, Lucas Joaquin, Drew Houpt, Tim Headington, and Tyler Campellone, who all served as producers.
The movie features a talented cast including Will Poulter, David Pasquesi, Anthony Carrigan, Richard E. Grant, Téa Leoni, Jessica Hynes, as well as stars Ortega and Paul Rudd.
