Nick Frost shared the unusual process he followed to get cast as Rubeus Hagrid in the new Harry Potter TV series coming to HBO.
In an interview with The Guardian, actor Frost shared that he and his family watched all eight Harry Potter movies together every Christmas before his audition. While being a fan and rewatching the films isn’t unusual given the series’ popularity, Frost went above and beyond – he confessed to writing the name ‘Hagrid’ approximately 7,000 times.
The actor revealed the surprising origin of his unusual audition preparation: his partner suggested repeatedly writing the character’s name. The night before, he tried a bit of ‘manifesting’ – hoping to increase his chances of getting the part. He spent the evening writing the character’s name, Hagrid, thousands of times while rewatching the original films, and it seemed to work! While his talent was undoubtedly the main reason he got the role, this story adds an interesting layer to how he approached the audition.
I’m a big Harry Potter fan – my family and I watch all the movies together every Christmas, starting December 20th and continuing for about ten days. Interestingly, before I got the part of Hagrid, my partner suggested I try to visualize it happening. So, last Christmas, I spent the entire day watching all the Harry Potter films on Sky, and while I did, I wrote the name “Hagrid” over 7,000 times!
Despite winning over the casting directors at HBO for the new Harry Potter series, not everyone was convinced. Chris Columbus, who directed the first two Harry Potter films, admitted he had reservations. While appearing on The Rest Is Entertainment podcast, he said the chosen actor looked right for the role, he questioned the point of a reboot if it wouldn’t be significantly different from the original movies.
Despite some dismissing his concerns, director Chris Columbus raised a valid point about the upcoming Harry Potter series on HBO. While it’s great that Warwick Davis is returning as Professor Flitwick, and keeping familiar elements isn’t necessarily a negative, Columbus argued it somewhat misses the point of a remake – which should ideally offer a fresh, new experience. He emphasized, however, that he’s still enthusiastic about the reboot and sees this as a minor observation.
I saw some photos of Nick Frost wearing the exact same Hagrid costume my team and I designed. It’s a bit strange – I expected the new costumes to be different, but it seems like they’re going with something very similar. Honestly, it’s flattering to see our design used so directly. I’m excited to see what they do with it, but it also feels like I’ve seen this all before.
The director explained that his mixed feelings stemmed from his close relationship with the late Robbie Coltrane, who originally played Hagrid. He told The Standard that he did speak with Tom Felton (who played Draco Malfoy, referred to as ‘Frost’ in the text) after his first statements, and clarified his perspective.
It feels incredibly strange and unreal. Robbie Coltrane and I were very close, so this is just… bizarre.
