Sex Criminals: Raunchy Comic Getting Prime Video TV Show From Kumail Nanjiani

Prime Video has greenlit a Sex Criminals TV show.

Sex Criminals is a comic book series from Image Comics, created by writer Matt Fraction and artist Chip Zdarsky. It began in 2013 and continued for 31 issues, collected into six volumes. The story follows a couple who find they can freeze time during sex, and they decide to use this power to commit bank robberies.

What do we know about the Sex Criminals show?

Okay, so I’ve got some exciting news for you! Amazon MGM Studios has officially greenlit ‘Sex Criminals’ as a TV series. We’re getting eight episodes, and I’m particularly thrilled because Kumail Nanjiani, Emily V. Gordon, and Tze Chun are writing it – a fantastic team! And get this, Kumail Nanjiani is also going to star in the show, alongside his wife, Emily Gordon, who is co-writing. This is a project I’ll definitely be keeping my eye on.

The description for the first issue of the comic introduces Suzie, an ordinary girl with a remarkable secret: she can freeze time during sex. She meets Jon, who shares this same ability. Naturally, they decide to use their powers for a life of crime, starting with bank robberies.

I’m really excited about the upcoming Sex Criminals show! It’s great to see Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment involved – they consistently back interesting projects. Along with LuckyChap, Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon’s Winter Coat Films are producing, and of course, the comic’s creators, Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky, are onboard as well. Louie Hayes will be handling production duties, which feels like a solid team to bring this to life.

Gordon and Nanjiani explained that “Sex Criminals” is precisely the type of project Winter Coat hopes to create – unique love stories set in unusual circumstances. They were immediately drawn to Matt and Chip’s comic book when LuckyChap Entertainment shared it, and are thrilled to be developing it into a series with Tze Chun and Prime Video.

Fraction and Zdarsky expressed their excitement about the talented team adapting their comic, jokingly calling it ‘dumb’ as a term of endearment.

Peter Friedlander of Amazon MGM Studios praised “Sex Criminals” as a daring, funny, and truly unique story with a surprisingly heartfelt love story. He highlighted Emily, Kumail, and Tze’s ability to bring a fresh and emotionally resonant approach to the source material. Friedlander also expressed excitement about collaborating with LuckyChap, Winter Coat Films, and the comic’s creators, Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky, to share this memorable world and its characters with viewers worldwide on Prime Video.
