The new fantasy series coming to Apple TV from Brandon Sanderson is shaping up to be a great successor to Game of Thrones, and it’s already addressing the biggest issue that plagued the HBO show. While Game of Thrones is considered one of the best TV series ever made, its ending was famously disappointing and damaged the show’s overall reputation.
I’ve seen a lot of Game of Thrones spinoffs, and honestly, House of the Dragon seems to be falling into the same traps as the original series. That’s why I was absolutely thrilled to hear that a truly fantastic fantasy book series is finally getting a TV adaptation – it feels like exactly what we needed to move past the issues Game of Thrones had.
Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere Is Coming To Life In A New Way
Fantasy author Brandon Sanderson is incredibly productive, and his epic Cosmere universe is finally becoming a visual experience. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Apple TV has acquired the rights to the Cosmere, with plans to develop both a movie series and a television show.
Okay, huge news for fantasy fans! Brandon Sanderson’s epic worlds are finally heading to the screen. I just learned that his Mistborn series – seven books spread across two different timelines – is planned as a movie franchise. But that’s not all! His massive Stormlight Archive – already five books strong – is getting the TV treatment over at Apple TV. What’s really amazing is the level of control Sanderson is getting. He’s not just letting them adapt his work; he’s writing, producing, consulting, and has final approval over everything happening with the Cosmere franchise at Apple TV. Seriously, this is a deal unlike anything I’ve seen before – a total win for fans who want a faithful adaptation!
Brandon Sanderson has confirmed the deal on Reddit, sharing details with fans. He explained that Apple wants to be a genuine collaborator, and a major reason he chose to work with them is the amount of creative control he’ll have over the adaptations of his Cosmere universe.
Apple TV’s The Stormlight Archive Series Fixes A Game Of Thrones Problem
Many fans were disappointed with how Game of Thrones ended, largely because the show ran out of source material from George R.R. Martin’s unfinished books and the creators felt pressured to conclude the story quickly. But in a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, Martin himself pinpointed the biggest issue with the show’s final seasons.
The show’s creator explained that after the initial stages, his only involvement was developing the show’s universe. He also believed Game of Thrones could have lasted longer – possibly ten to thirteen seasons – to fully adapt the story. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Martin described his working relationship with House of the Dragon‘s showrunner, Ryan Condal, as very poor.
Martin said that during the second season of his show, the studio stopped taking his input. Fortunately, that won’t be a problem with Brandon Sanderson’s adaptations of his Cosmere books. Sanderson specifically chose Apple TV+ because he’s in charge of all creative decisions for the series. This gives him full control, and his new fantasy series has the potential to surpass even Game of Thrones in quality.
