Be warned, this article contains spoilers for the first three episodes of School Spirits season 3! School Spirits has just revealed a major secret about Mr. Martin.
The actors in School Spirits have shared how the surprising reveal about Mr. Martin in episode 2 of season 3 will permanently alter the show. Season 3 of School Spirits has continued to build on the show’s mysteries, finally giving viewers answers to questions they’ve had for a long time—including a deeper look into Mr. Martin’s history.
In season 3, episode 2, we learn that Mr. Martin wasn’t directly responsible for the bus crash that killed eight students. He was mysteriously pushed into the road, and it’s revealed a supernatural presence beneath Split River High School manipulated events. This force used a song from his childhood – one sung by a deceased friend – to influence him, meaning the accident wasn’t truly his fault.
During a conversation with ScreenRant’s Tatiana Hullender about the upcoming season of School Spirits, actors Nick Pugliese (Charley) and Sarah Yarkin (Rhonda) discussed the surprising reveal that Mr. Martin was involved in the bus crash. They shared how this discovery raises new mysteries about the ghosts haunting the school and highlights how much the main characters still have to learn.
In Episode 2, we finally learn what happened with the bus crash: Mr. Martin intentionally jumped in front of it. This revelation paints him as a consistently disruptive force, and it makes you rethink everything that’s going on beneath the surface. How does this new information change how you understand the events unfolding underground?
I think this just creates more confusion and raises a lot of questions. It feels like we’re constantly hitting dead ends, realizing we need to completely change direction. However, it does give us a better understanding of Mr. Martin’s past and what really happened with him.
Sarah Yarkin: It’s crazy. I think it opens up this whole new world.
Nick Pugliese: Literally!
Sarah Yarkin noted that the challenges they face are far greater and more complex than previously understood.
ScreenRant also interviewed Josh Zuckerman, who plays Mr. Martin, and Jennifer Tilly, who plays Dr. Deborah Hunter-Price, about the recent surprising reveal. Zuckerman discussed the internal conflict his character is facing – the struggle between good and evil – particularly now that his past has been revealed. Tilly expressed empathy for the difficult journey his character is on. Here’s what they shared:
After seeing the first three episodes and learning more about Mr. Martin, how much sympathy do you have for him – do you see him more as a villain or a victim?
Josh Zuckerman believes the goal is to keep the audience guessing about his character – whether he’s a good guy or a bad one, likeable or not. He enjoys playing the role because he simply acts on the character’s own reasoning, leaving it up to the viewers to decide if those actions are right or wrong. The character always has a reason for what he does, at least in his own mind.
The writing really clarifies the character’s choices. It’s especially effective at the start of season three, when we find out a significant secret from Mr. Martin’s past. This secret helps us understand his actions from the first two seasons and everything that’s been happening at the school.
Discovering the rich history and legends surrounding the school is really enjoyable, and it’s compelling to have your character experience that journey firsthand.
Jennifer Tilly points out that viewers might actually feel sympathy for the character. She wonders if anyone expected to feel bad for him, but acknowledges he’s in a really difficult situation in the third season, and it’s unclear what will happen next.

The second season of School Spirits revealed surprising details about Mr. Martin, including his unintentional role in Janet’s death. However, the school bus accident, which caused many more student fatalities, seems more directly connected to the mysterious scar. In both cases, Mr. Martin was simply unlucky, finding himself in the wrong place at the wrong time and suffering the consequences.
Despite his recent help, the characters in School Spirits still have reason to be cautious of him. He used to experiment on ghosts, attempting to break the barrier keeping them trapped within the school. His past actions suggest he isn’t entirely reliable, as his intentions didn’t always match what he did.
As season 3 of School Spirits unfolds each week, we can expect to learn more about Mr. Martin. With the mysteries beneath the school now coming to light, the main characters are sure to face new challenges. It’s likely that Mr. Martin will become even more involved in these events as the season continues.
New episodes of School Spirits season 3 air Wednesdays on Paramount+.
