A well-known source online has revealed the cast for the upcoming movie, Avengers: Doomsday, before any reshoots happen. Interestingly, Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Doctor Strange, is included, which some fans didn’t expect. It’s still unknown if the actor, who wasn’t part of the first cast announcement, will actually appear in the film. Cumberbatch’s character, Doctor Strange, was last seen in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, battling Scarlet Witch alongside Wong and America Chavez.
Benedict Cumberbatch could be playing a variant in Avengers: Doomsday
According to a recently leaked cast list, the actor famous for playing Sherlock Holmes is rumored to be playing a different version of the Doctor Strange character in the upcoming ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ movie.
Popular internet source MyTimetoShineHello recently posted an updated list of actors likely to participate in upcoming reshoots for the film. The list includes both confirmed and unconfirmed cast members, and indicates that Benedict Cumberbatch will be playing a wizard who assists the villain, “Doom.”
Although Marvel Studios hasn’t officially said whether Benedict Cumberbatch will be in Avengers: Doomsday, the actor himself has given mixed signals about his participation.
In a January 2025 interview with Variety, Benedict Cumberbatch, known for his role in The Imitation Game, explained that his superhero character wouldn’t appear in the upcoming film, Doomsday. He said it was because the character didn’t fit with the storyline.
Cumberbatch stated that Doctor Strange will be a key player in the upcoming movie, Avengers: Secret Wars. He also hinted that the character’s story will continue in a future solo film, suggesting Strange has a significant role to play in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Benedict Cumberbatch clarified his previous statements. At the Sundance Film Festival premiere of his movie, The Thing With Feathers, he told Business Insider he’d mistakenly implied he wouldn’t be in future Marvel films, saying, “I got that wrong, I am in the next one.” He jokingly added, “Don’t ever believe anything I say,” with a smile.
Avengers: Doomsday will be released in theaters on December 18, 2026. The movie was directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, and the story was written by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely.
