The Pitt Keeps Teasing New AI Technology, And I Have A Bad Feeling About Where This Is Going

What I really love about The Pitt is how a simple conversation or patient encounter early in the day can snowball into a huge deal as the long shift goes on. I’ve seen a lot of discussion about a potential doctor romance and some risky motorcycle choices, but I haven’t noticed anyone talking about something else from the show’s second season: the use of AI in the hospital.

Soon after the highly praised second season of The Pitt began airing in 2026, I noticed a quick scene featuring the new doctor, Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi (played by Sepideh Moafi). She mentioned a new AI program designed to help with medical charting, potentially reducing workload and improving patient care. While it sounds promising, I have a nagging feeling that something isn’t right.

What’s the saying about the road to Hell and good intentions?

I Totally Understand Why Dr. Baran Wants To Modernize The Pitt

Let me be clear: I’m not against progress, and I can see why the new doctor wants to update things at ‘The Pitt.’ It’s a really hectic, high-pressure emergency room where doctors have to make quick decisions to help patients, and that can be tough.

I’m not a medical professional, but based on what I’ve seen in medical dramas, keeping detailed patient records seems to add a lot of extra work and stress for doctors and nurses who are already overwhelmed. However, in the show, Dr. Baran claims new technology could reduce charting time by up to 80%, while also making both patients and doctors happier. That sounds positive, but I’m still worried about potential downsides.

We’ve Already Seen Her AI Tool Make A Mistake, And I Think It’s Going To Get Worse

The second episode, “8:00 a.m.,” follows Dr. Baran and her medical students as they test a new AI scribe with a real patient. The test goes smoothly – the medical team completes the check-up efficiently, the patient feels good, and everyone is positive about the AI tool.

While reviewing the patient’s information on the computer, Dr. Dennis Whitaker (Gerran Howell) discovered the AI-generated report incorrectly stated she was taking Risperdal, an antipsychotic, when she actually takes Restoril to help her sleep. Dr. Baran dismissed it as a simple mistake and reminded the staff to double-check everything, but I became very worried.

I don’t want to jinx anything, but I’m worried an issue with the AI technology will cause a serious problem for Dr. Baran or someone at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. I’m bracing for something bad to happen, and I’m really dreading it when it does.

Am I overreacting, or is something actually wrong? Either way, I’m planning to tune in to new episodes of The Pitt on Thursdays through HBO Max to see what happens.

Stream The Pitt on HBO Max.
