Apple TV+ often gets overlooked when people talk about top streaming services. Compared to giants like HBO and Netflix, it can be tough to see why you’d subscribe to another platform, especially when it doesn’t always seem to have shows everyone’s talking about. But that’s actually the strategy Apple TV+ has intentionally adopted, and it’s proving successful.
This platform has quickly become a favorite place to discover excellent sci-fi series, especially with so much content available now. Many of the shows released here aren’t just good—they’re truly among the best.
Severance Is a Compelling Puzzle Box Mystery
There was a gap in programming that needed a new show. That show finally arrived in 2022 with the debut of Severance. The series quickly resonated with audiences who felt drained by the demands of corporate jobs and workplace environments.
In the far future, Mark S. chose to undergo a procedure offered by his company, Lumon, that separated his work life from his personal life by dividing his consciousness. While Lumon presented it as a way to protect company secrets, anyone with corporate experience suspects there was a hidden agenda.
After his wife passed away, Mark chose to undergo a procedure called severance as a way to cope with the grief, not realizing it would give his ‘innie’ – the work version of himself – a completely independent life. Severance is a uniquely unsettling show that captures the bizarre nature of office work while also exploring thought-provoking ideas. The two seasons available on Apple TV+ are considered by many to be some of the platform’s best, and viewers are eagerly awaiting the third.
Silo Is the Best Dystopian Series On Television
Apple TV+ has some good science fiction shows, but Silo really stands out. Based on the books by Hugh Howey, Silo takes place far in the future, after a disaster made the Earth’s surface unlivable. To survive, the last humans live in massive underground structures called silos.
Society within the silo became rigidly divided, with the wealthy and influential at the top and manual laborers at the bottom. Though life was generally peaceful, people weren’t allowed to investigate the past. They were simply told the world outside was poisonous, and anyone who asked to leave disappeared forever.
Juliette, a mechanic with limited authority, began to suspect something was terribly wrong. After her boyfriend, George, was mysteriously murdered, she started her own investigation and uncovered a widespread conspiracy within the silo, reaching its highest levels. Silo offered a familiar yet captivating take on a post-apocalyptic world, centered around a gripping mystery.
The Studio Was One Season of Perfection
Some satirical shows are so accurate that they blur the line between what’s fake and what’s real. Seth Rogen’s The Studio was one of these, earning a lot of Emmy nominations despite only lasting one season. Rogen created and starred in the show as Matt Remick, an artist navigating the world of movie studios. The show cleverly explored the conflict between making meaningful films and the demands of running a studio, offering a sharp commentary on how Hollywood works today.
I’ve been following Matt’s story, and it’s frustrating to watch him try to stay true to his artistic vision while the studio only cares about making money. He really believes you can make good, meaningful films that people will also enjoy, but he keeps hitting walls. It was so clear right from the start – in the very first episode, they literally told him to make a movie based on Kool-Aid! It just showed how little they valued his ideas.
Movies based on existing franchises are dominating the box office, often overshadowing original stories. The Studio delivers a pointed message through its funny performances and a surprisingly large number of celebrity appearances. Even after just one episode, it seems destined to…
Shrinking Was a Realistic Portrayal of Grief
Everyone was excited to see Jason Segel back on TV, and his new show, Shrinking, delivered. After ten years on How I Met Your Mother, he took on the role of Jimmy, a husband and father dealing with the recent loss of his wife. Unlike the generally well-behaved characters he’s played before, Jimmy was flawed and made a lot of bad choices. While his teenage daughter, Alice, also struggled with grief, Jimmy dealt with his pain in unhealthy ways.
It was ironic that Jimmy, a therapist himself, was struggling with his own life. Instead of guiding patients to find their own solutions, he controversially began directly telling them what to do to improve things.
Blending elements of family drama and workplace comedy, Shrinking features Jimmy and his funny colleagues as they navigate the difficult and often humorous experience of grief. The show, created by Brett Goldstein (following his success with Ted Lasso), offers a raw, honest, and surprisingly funny portrayal of loss and healing.
Pluribus Has a Lot of Potential
Vince Gilligan’s first show after Breaking Bad had a lot of expectations, and it definitely grabbed people’s attention. He returned with a series exploring the end of the world. The story centers on Carol, a romance fantasy author who felt held back by her previous success. However, this became unimportant when a mysterious alien signal connected everyone on Earth into a single, shared consciousness. Carol was among the very few who managed to keep her individual thoughts and independence.
Carol was a fascinating and unusual character on television. Unlike most women portrayed on screen, she was allowed to be flawed and inconsistent as she adjusted to a changed life. Despite her best intentions, she developed feelings for Zosia, who was connected to a collective consciousness. While the ethics of a relationship with someone unable to truly consent are questionable, Carol rationalized it to herself.
Unlike typical stories that spell everything out, this show lets the audience interpret the world and its events for themselves. The first season ended with a thrilling cliffhanger, hinting that the next season will be even more action-packed.
