The Frozen Ground: Nicolas Cage’s True Crime Thriller Resurfaces on Tubi

A chilling crime movie is gaining popularity on Tubi. The Frozen Ground, a 2013 thriller inspired by a true story about a serial killer, is now among the top 10 most-watched films on the free streaming service.

On January 28th, the movie The Frozen Ground ranked eighth on Tubi’s most popular list. It outperformed Geostorm and Martin Lawrence’s Blue Streak, which came in ninth and tenth place, respectively. The Frozen Ground was behind several other films, including The Fifth Element and Twin, with the Tubi original film taking the top spot.

Inspired by the true story of Alaskan serial killer Robert Hansen, who murdered at least 17 women between 1972 and 1983, the film The Frozen Ground follows Nicolas Cage as he tries to catch Hansen. He’s aided by Cindy Paulson, a young woman who managed to escape the killer. The film also stars John Cusack as Robert Hansen, Vanessa Hudgens as Cindy Paulson, and features supporting roles from 50 Cent, Jodi Lyn O’Keefe, and others.

Despite featuring a strong cast, the movie The Frozen Ground didn’t attract many viewers and was a commercial failure, earning only $5.6 million of its $19.2 million production cost. However, critics were surprisingly positive. While audiences gave it a middling score of 50% on Rotten Tomatoes, critics rated it higher at 60%, specifically praising the performances of Nicolas Cage and John Cusack, as well as the film’s distinctive winter atmosphere.

Nicolas Cage Turned To A Real-Life State Trooper In Preparing For The Role

John Cusack’s character in The Frozen Ground wasn’t the only one based on a real person. Nicolas Cage’s character, Jack, was inspired by Glenn Flothe, the actual Alaska State Trooper detective who investigated the crimes. Cage even consulted with Flothe to prepare for the role, and Flothe actually acted as the voice on the phone during some scenes.

Nicolas Cage described the man as a genuine hero, adding that he approached the role with serious dedication, as he told Collider before the film’s release.

I wanted to portray him positively, and I let him know that. By ‘positively,’ I meant to present the information honestly and responsibly – without exaggeration or self-promotion. I simply wanted to share the facts and highlight his good deeds and actions as they were.

During their long conversation, one question really helped Nicolas Cage develop his character. He asked the man, ‘Did Hansen’s crimes bother you? Did they affect your work or your sleep?’ The man immediately replied, ‘No, it didn’t bother me at all.’ Cage said this direct response convinced him the man was as intimidating as Hansen, but firmly on the side of law and order – determined and unwavering in his pursuit of justice.
