Netflix has released a first look at Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole, a new series based on the popular Harry Hole books. This isn’t the first time Nesbø’s work has been adapted for film; The Snowman, starring Michael Fassbender, hit theaters in 2017. That movie followed detective Harry Hole as he investigated a serial killer who left snowmen at the scene of each crime. The cast also included Rebecca Ferguson, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Val Kilmer, and J.K. Simmons.
Netflix is creating a TV series based on another one of Jo Nesbø’s popular books. Tobias Santelmann will now play the main character, replacing Michael Fassbender.
Netflix has shared a sneak peek trailer for its upcoming series, Detective Hole, inspired by The Devil’s Star. The show premieres on March 26th and introduces viewers to the detective, beginning with a disturbing car accident scene. The main character, Harry, ominously states, “I think it’s because I’m thirsty. And I’m always thirsty.”
One character asks what it’s like to work with Detective Hole, and another responds that he’s incredibly skilled at his job, but doesn’t excel at much beyond that.
The initial glimpses of the story reveal that Harry’s investigation into a serial killer is complicated by another issue: a corrupt coworker named Tom Waaler. Tom tries to manipulate Harry, even telling him, “We don’t have to be enemies,” and suggesting they’re alike in order to get Harry to cooperate quietly.
The pressure on Harry keeps increasing, and he’s told the issues he’s facing aren’t with his work, but with him personally. The trailer features quick cuts of exciting moments like car chases, showing Harry starting to fall apart. It closes with him at a bar, ordering another drink.

While The Snowman was made elsewhere, the new Detective Hole series is proudly Norwegian, staying true to the author Jo Nesbø’s roots. Nesbø has been writing the Harry Hole novels since 1997, and has published over a dozen books in the series, with the latest one appearing in 2023.
Several of Jo Nesbø’s books have been made into movies and TV shows, like Headhunters, The Hanging Sun, and Killer Heat. However, The Snowman was the first story featuring detective Harry Hole to be adapted for the screen.
Even though the movie The Snowman didn’t perform well in theaters or with critics, Netflix is still planning to create its own series based on the popular detective stories.
Featuring Stellan Skarsgård, the cast of Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole also includes Joel Kinnaman, Pia Tjelta, Peter Stormare, Anders Baasmo Christiansen, Ellen Helinder, and Simon Berger.
Jo Nesbø is the writer and part of the production team, which also includes Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, Katy Rozelle, Rene Ezra, Niclas Salomonsson, and Øystein Karlsen. Øystein Karlsen and Anna Zackrisson are directing the series.
Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole premieres Thursday, March 26 on Netflix.
