I remember first discovering The Vampire Diaries when it premiered on the CW back in September 2009! It quickly became a huge part of my life, and I was hooked all the way through its finale in March 2017. Created by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec, and inspired by the books by L. J. Smith, the show gave us eight amazing seasons and a total of 171 episodes – it’s still something I revisit often!
Even though it finished airing in 2017, The Vampire Diaries remains popular with viewers. On January 27, 2026, it ranked at number 9 on Netflix’s list of most-watched TV shows, behind titles like His & Hers, Finding Her Edge, Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials, Can This Love Be Translated, Free Bert, Run Away, Stranger Things, Raw, and Sandokan (according to data from FlixPatrol).
The ongoing popularity of shows like The Vampire Diaries proves that older series can still succeed with streaming. Originally, the show averaged 3.60 million viewers in its first season and was the CW’s biggest hit until Arrow came along. Throughout its run, it received numerous awards, including four People’s Choice Awards and thirty Teen Choice Awards.
I first got hooked on this show because of Elena, and how she found herself caught between these two incredibly different vampire brothers, Stefan and Damon. It wasn’t just the romance though – the show slowly revealed this amazing, complex backstory about the town and its secrets. It started with vampires, but then witches, werewolves, even ghosts showed up! There were so many characters, all connected to the families who originally built the town. And watching Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, and Ian Somerhalder become stars through these roles was really something special.
The fact that The Vampire Diaries is currently popular on Netflix shows how a captivating supernatural show can continue to draw viewers even after it’s finished. This helps the series remain well-known, both for dedicated fans and those just discovering it.
