Following the success of The Beekeeper, Jason Statham returns with another thrilling action movie, Shelter. Surprisingly, January has become a great time for Statham’s films to perform well at the box office, and Shelter is expected to continue that trend.
The scene opens with a masked agent entering a barn and discovering his partner hanging from the ceiling. While the agent is cautiously searching for a suspect, he’s suddenly attacked by Jason Statham’s character, Mason, wielding a knife. A brief but intense fight breaks out, and Mason quickly gains the upper hand.
His moment of triumph doesn’t last long when he realizes the girl he was supposed to protect has been kidnapped.
A man living alone on a secluded island saves a girl from a dangerous storm, and their lives are quickly turned upside down. He’s forced to face his troubled history as they fight to survive, embarking on a thrilling and emotional journey where they both have a chance to find peace.
In addition to Jason Statham, the movie Shelter features Bodhi Rae Breathnach (known for Hamnet and Blink Twice), and Academy Award nominee Bill Nighy (Lazarus). Ric Roman Waugh, who directed Greenland and Angel Has Fallen, directed the film.
Shelter Direction Praised Jason Statham’s Action Skills
This filmmaker has a strong background in action movies and a knack for showcasing leading actors. They’ve previously worked with Gerard Butler on successful films like Angel Has Fallen, Greenland, and the newest installment in the series.
Recently, Waugh discussed the upcoming sequel to the 2020 film Greenland, and shared a connection between the movie’s two main characters.
I recently worked with Jason Statham,” Waugh said. “We have a lot of respect for each other, but we also aren’t afraid to challenge each other and find ways to improve the work and really push boundaries.
He explained that progress happens when two people challenge each other to improve. If only one person is pushing for more, it’s harder to truly maximize potential.
The director explained that he didn’t cast Gerard Butler and Jason Statham simply because they’re famous. He’s searching for actors who can portray relatable, ordinary people in action roles, rather than typical action heroes. He wants performers who aren’t afraid to play someone believable and down-to-earth.
Waugh described the action stars as genuinely down-to-earth guys. He noted that Jason Statham has a natural confidence and prioritizes his family, while Gerard Butler is sensitive, caring, and very grounded – qualities that perfectly suit the roles they play in these films.
Shelter fights its way to theaters on Jan. 30.
