Starring Emma Thompson (known from Harry Potter), Dead of Winter is a shocking mystery-thriller. The film centers on a grieving widow who, while driving through rural Minnesota in the winter, seeks shelter in a secluded cabin. There, she discovers a terrifying situation: a disturbed couple is holding a young woman captive, and she’s forced to fight for her own survival.
The thriller Dead of Winter comes to HBO Max on February 6th, letting more viewers see Thompson battle a dangerous couple and struggle to survive. The film has earned a solid 75% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviewers highlighting Thompson’s performance as moving, realistic, and outstanding.
Brian Kirk, known for directing episodes of Game of Thrones, Luther, and the film 21 Bridges, helms this tense and cold thriller. The screenplay is by Nicholas Jacobson-Larson, who worked on Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, and Dalton Leeb. The film stars Judy Greer, March Menchaca, Laura Marsden, Gaia Wise, Cuan Hosty-Blaney, Dalton Leeb, Paul Hamilton, Lloyd Hutchinson, and Brian F. O’Byrne. In addition to acting in the movie, Thompson also served as an executive producer.
As a huge movie fan, I’ve always loved Emma Thompson – she’s brilliant! From her memorable turn as Sybil Trelawney in the Harry Potter films, to her work in Saving Mr. Banks and Sense and Sensibility, she consistently delivers. But I was really impressed by her recent performance as Barb in Dead of Winter – it’s one of her best, in my opinion. And there’s more to come! I’m excited to see what she does next, with projects like Hear Me Roar, Down Cemetery Road, and even The Sheep Detectives on the horizon.
After a three-year break from acting, Dead of Winter helped launch Thompson back into film, leading to roles in movies like Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy (where she played Dr. Rawlings) and Down Cemetery Road.
