After five weeks at number one, Avatar: Fire & Ash has fallen to second place at the box office. The latest Avatar film earned about $7 million this weekend. The new thriller Mercy debuted in first place, bringing in $11.2 million in North America and $22.8 million globally.
The movie Mercy takes place in Los Angeles, not too far in the future, where crime is increasing. Detective Christopher Raven, played by Chris Pratt, is accused of murdering his wife (Annabelle Wallis) and is put on trial. The judge presiding over his case isn’t a person, but an artificial intelligence portrayed by Rebecca Ferguson of Dune. Raven has just 90 minutes to convince Judge Maddox he’s innocent, or she will carry out his execution.
The movie Mercy cost $60 million to produce, and while it opened at number one in theaters this weekend, it’s uncertain if it will earn back its production costs. Critics haven’t been kind to the film. Although winter storms in the US likely kept some viewers away, Mercy also didn’t perform as well as expected in international markets, where weather wasn’t a factor.
‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Disappointed Despite Breaking $1 Billion
Avatar: Fire & Ash is finishing its run in theaters. So far, it’s earned $378 million domestically and over $1 billion internationally, totaling $1.378 billion worldwide. While that’s a significant amount, it falls short of the earnings of the original 2009 Avatar ($2.9 billion – the highest-grossing film ever) and 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water ($2.3 billion – the third highest-grossing film ever). Currently, Avatar: Fire & Ash ranks as the nineteenth highest-grossing movie of all time. For most films, that would be a major success, but considering the performance of the previous Avatar movies, it’s considered a bit of a letdown.
The biggest Hollywood hit of 2025 was the animated family film Zootopia 2. It landed in third place this weekend, but has earned an impressive $1.7 billion globally, making it the ninth highest-grossing movie ever. You can expect to find it on digital platforms and Blu-ray soon. The suspenseful thriller The Housemaid came in fourth, and 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple completed the top five.

Not many new movies are coming out next weekend, so Mercy might stay as the number one movie in theaters, particularly if the weather improves and more people feel comfortable going out. If you’re looking for something to watch at home, there are also several other excellent films starring Rebecca Ferguson that are worth checking out.
