The Monsterverse movies have delivered some great climactic battles featuring Godzilla and Kong, but the upcoming film, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, should try something new. This sixth installment in the series will likely bring Godzilla and Kong together again to fight SpaceGodzilla.
Godzilla and Kong have teamed up twice before – first to fight Mechagodzilla in Godzilla vs. Kong, and then against Shimo, the Skar King, and his ape army in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Considering how powerful SpaceGodzilla is, another huge battle between these titans seems inevitable, but let’s hope this one is different than the last two.
Kong Shouldn’t Land The Final Blow Against SpaceGodzilla
Despite Godzilla consistently being stronger than Kong, Kong has delivered the finishing strike in both of their team-up movies. In Godzilla vs. Kong, Kong used the axe to defeat Mechagodzilla, and in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, he was the one who ultimately destroyed the frozen Skar King.
These moments felt like small victories for Kong, especially after losing to Godzilla in their previous fights. While it’s good that both monsters got a win, the movie shouldn’t ignore the fact that Godzilla is ultimately the more powerful Titan.
If the reason Kong defeated both Mechagodzilla and the Skar King was his importance to the story, then Godzilla should have the same opportunity in the new film, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. Since SpaceGodzilla, who is likely the villain, will clearly have strong ties to Godzilla, it wouldn’t make sense for Kong to be the central character again. Godzilla deserves a chance to be the driving force of the plot.
Godzilla Should Be The Main Protagonist Of Godzilla x Kong: Supernova
Even though Godzilla x Kong: Supernova will likely feature SpaceGodzilla as the main villain, many fans worry that Kong will still be the central character and get more screen time. This makes sense, considering the previous films, Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong, established Kong as the character audiences easily connect with and support because of his relationship with humans.
However, past Godzilla films demonstrate that it is possible to tell compelling stories about the monster. Movies like Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, and Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla prove that Godzilla’s immense power and scale don’t prevent audiences from feeling emotionally connected to him.
For example, in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, the story made Godzilla the hero – not the people – because his only motivation was saving his son whose egg had been stolen. The new film, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, can learn from the 1990s Godzilla movies and easily create a compelling story that focuses on Godzilla.
