As a huge movie and TV buff, I have to say one of Netflix’s original series is a truly brilliant psychological thriller – though it’s definitely not an easy watch because of the heavy themes it tackles. Even with all the new streaming services popping up, Netflix still feels like the king when it comes to what’s available, with a mix of shows and movies they’ve licensed and their own original productions. And honestly, a couple of those originals are right up there with the best TV shows ever made.
One standout show is Mindhunter, a thrilling crime series that delves into the psychology of serial killers. It’s based on the 1995 book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit by John Douglas and Mark Olshaker. The series premiered on Netflix in 2017 and was widely praised for its high-quality production, direction, acting, and writing.
Despite initial plans for a third season, the crime thriller Mindhunter only has two seasons available. However, it’s highly recommended for fans of the genre, though be warned – it can be quite intense.
Mindhunter Is A Difficult Watch

The series Mindhunter, created by Joe Penhall and executive produced by David Fincher, is set in the late 1970s. It follows FBI special agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) as they pioneer new techniques in criminal psychology. After Ford becomes fascinated with understanding what makes criminals tick, he and Tench begin a groundbreaking research project.
The Ford and Tench project involves interviewing incarcerated serial killers to gain insight into their minds, hoping to use that understanding to help solve current cases. The show Mindhunter depicts interviews with well-known serial killers like Edmund Kemper, Dennis Rader (BTK), David Berkowitz, also known as the Son of Sam, and Charles Manson, over its two seasons.
The show Mindhunter is captivating because it delves into the minds of criminals alongside the FBI agents Ford and Tench. However, this also makes it a difficult show to watch. The serial killers depicted are based on actual people and their terrible crimes, blurring the line between fiction and reality.
Mindhunter is a thriller that takes its time building suspense, which is unusual for the genre. Its realistic and unsettling atmosphere, created through both its visuals and storytelling, can be quite disturbing. Despite this, it’s a fascinating show that will keep you hooked, though it may not appeal to all viewers.
How David Fincher Makes Mindhunter Entertaining
David Fincher is known for creating suspenseful, psychologically driven thrillers, and that style is clearly visible in his series Mindhunter. He tackles challenging subjects with care, and Mindhunter manages to be both respectful of the true stories it’s based on and incredibly engaging, even though it deals with dark material.
Fincher prioritized realistic conversations and the details of the investigation itself, instead of relying on action, violence, or sensational imagery. This approach allows viewers to follow the case as it unfolds alongside the characters, without being overwhelmed by disturbing visuals.
David Fincher brought a movie-like quality to Mindhunter, with impressive visuals and storytelling. The show is intentionally unsettling, and most viewers will likely finish it feeling disturbed – which is precisely the effect it’s designed to have.
Crime Shows Should Take Lessons From Mindhunter
Most crime shows concentrate on who committed the crime, which is often engaging. However, Mindhunter uniquely focuses on why criminals do what they do. This approach adds layers of depth and complexity to the stories and characters, exploring the darkest corners of the criminal mind.
Unlike many crime dramas, Mindhunter prioritizes psychological exploration and conversation over graphic violence or intense action. It encourages viewers to examine their own perspectives in the process. The show also delves into the personal lives and challenges of the FBI agents Ford and Tench, providing a well-rounded look at all those involved.
Unlike many crime shows, Mindhunter takes a unique approach to the true crime genre. Though no series has quite matched its impact or quality, its influence on future crime dramas will likely become clear over time.
