Rubem Fleischer, the director of Now You See Me, has hinted at possible storylines for a fourth film in the series. The magical mystery franchise began in 2013 with Now You See Me, directed by Louis Leterrier, and followed a team of illusionists – J. Daniel Atlas, Merritt McKinney, Jack Wilder, and Henley Reeves – who pulled off incredible heists.
The show features a group called the Four Horsemen, skilled street magicians who cleverly use their performances to cover up bank robberies. The latest film, Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, which was released last year, reunited the original Horsemen and introduced some new faces.
Director Louis Letterier recently told MovieWeb about plans for the Horsemen’s return in Now You See Me 4. He explained the ending of Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, where many characters declare themselves to be the Horsemen, and pointed out that “their group has gotten bigger” since the first film.
He believes these characters will team up in future stories. Here’s the complete quote from Fleischer:
At the film’s ending, all the characters join on stage, link arms, and declare, ‘We are the horsemen.’ Good night. The group started with just four, but has expanded to include Lula and now three more young characters, bringing the total to eight. I appreciate that the film simply refers to ‘horsemen’ – like in the visual design – even when showing the wider scene with the drone shot. I hope this suggests they’ll all be collaborating in future movies.
Fleischer is right about how the series grew. The second movie, Now You See Me 2, added Lula, played by Lizzy Caplan, as a new main character. However, the overall cast size didn’t increase much because Isla Fisher, who played Henley, wasn’t in that film.
Despite Fisher returning for the sequel, Now You See Me, Now You Don’t, the filmmakers chose to keep both magicians in the group. This meant the core cast, originally known as the Four Horsemen, grew to five members with the inclusion of both Lula and Henley.
The younger characters – Dominic Sessa as Bosco, Ariana Greenblatt as June, and Justice Smith as Charlie – initially have some friction with the more experienced Horsemen. However, director Fleischer has stated that everyone resolves their differences by the movie’s end.
The Now You See Me movies have always featured a large cast, but Now You See Me 4 will have an even bigger one. The number of main actors has actually doubled since the first film.
Okay, so the Now You See Me series is heading in a new direction, and honestly, I’m intrigued. The magic and mystery we’ve come to expect are still there, but it looks like they’re juggling a lot more characters this time around. The big question is whether this expanded cast will create a stronger team dynamic or if it will spread the focus too thin, preventing us from really connecting with anyone. We’ll have to wait for Now You See Me 4 to find out, but it’s definitely a shift in approach.
