Why Was Jonathan Majors Fired as Kang by Marvel?

Initially, it was anticipated that actor Jonathan Majors would soon become a major antagonist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His impressive introduction as Kang the Conqueror suggested a significant role in Marvel’s future strategies. However, following events in late 2023, Marvel Studios decided to part ways with Majors. Here’s what transpired.

Here’s why Jonathan Majors got fired by Disney and Marvel

In late December 2023, Marvel Studios decided to terminate the services of actor Jonathan Majors, following swiftly on the heels of a New York City court’s verdict finding him guilty of reckless assault and harassment in the second degree.

In relation to a domestic violence incident with his former girlfriend, Grace Jabbari, a court rendered its judgment. Following this conviction, both Disney and Marvel announced their decision to cease collaborations with Majors, effectively ending his tenure as Kang the Conqueror within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In 2021, Marvel introduced Jonathan Majors’ character as He Who Remains in Loki Season 1. Later on, he portrayed several Kang variants in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Loki Season 2. These roles were intended to form the foundation of Marvel’s multiverse storyline from Phases 4 to 6, with Majors set to spearhead 2026’s Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. However, due to his legal issues, the studio postponed these plans.

In the trial, Majors was declared guilty on two counts, but was found not guilty on two other charges. The authorities brought the case against him following his arrest in March 2023, which was due to accusations of assaulting Jabbari during a dispute inside a taxi cab.

Law enforcement stated that he delivered a slap, inflicting neck bruises and an ear wound on her. Despite his lawyers asserting he was “undoubtedly not guilty” and presenting supposed video proof, the court found him guilty. This verdict marked the end of his tenure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where he had been planned to assume the role as the upcoming primary antagonist following Thanos.

Despite his recent conviction, Majors remains optimistic about a possible comeback. In an interview with USA Today, he expressed enthusiasm for resuming the role of Kang, praising his Marvel colleagues and expressing admiration for the entertainment industry. However, Marvel has since moved forward by rebranding Avengers: The Kang Dynasty as Avengers: Doomsday, featuring Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr.
