Sam Raimi Wants to Direct a Batman Movie

Sam Raimi, known for directing Marvel films, has expressed interest in directing a Batman movie. While promoting his new thriller, Send Help, Raimi discussed his favorite superheroes, revealing a particular fondness for the iconic DC character.

In a recent interview, Sam Raimi mentioned he’s interested in directing a superhero movie, and specifically, he’d love to work on a Batman film. He actually tried to get the rights to make a Batman movie at one point, but wasn’t able to secure them.

He’s not stopping with just one character, though. He’s also interested in adapting others from DC Comics and classic pulp magazines. “I’m a big fan of The Shadow, but I wasn’t able to secure the rights to him,” he said. “Superman has always been a personal favorite of mine, too.”

He explained that he’s a big fan of many DC characters and would be eager to make a movie if the writers could create a compelling, authentic story. He emphasized the importance of staying true to the character’s established universe and honoring what fans love about them, focusing on meaningful conflicts and challenges that highlight the hero’s strengths. Ultimately, he wants a story that takes the character on a genuine and satisfying journey.

Spider-Man Director Sam Raimi Wants to Make a Batman Movie

Sam Raimi may be joining the DC Universe’s Batman film project a bit later than others. The movie will be directed by Andy Muschietti, who also directed The Flash.

Even after many years, Sam Raimi still enjoys working with superhero stories. He recently directed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, bringing another character created by Steve Ditko and Stan Lee to the big screen as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Considering James Gunn has already directed the first film in the new DC Universe – Superman – and is planned to direct a sequel slated for 2027, it now seems even less probable that Sam Raimi will ever direct a Superman movie.

A new movie based on The Shadow hasn’t been made since the 1994 film. Around 2006, director Sam Raimi tried to revive the character, with plans for a series of films featuring other classic pulp heroes like Doc Savage and The Avenger. However, Raimi later confirmed in 2012 that those plans were cancelled.

There’s still a chance we might see a The Shadow movie directed by Sam Raimi. Before that happens, it’s worth remembering Darkman, a film he made in 1990 after his first effort to bring The Shadow to the big screen was rejected.

Send Help opens in theaters on January 30.
