Netflix’s new eight-episode romance series, Finding Her Edge, has quickly become a hit, reaching the top of the streaming charts worldwide. Based on Jennifer Iacopelli’s novel, the show centers around Adriana Russo (Madelyn Keys) who begins training with a new ice dancing partner, Brayden (Cale Ambrozic), while her former partner and childhood crush unexpectedly returns.
Iacopelli’s story draws inspiration from Jane Austen’s Persuasion. In that novel, the main character, Anne Elliot, finds herself in a difficult love triangle between her former love, Captain Wentworth, and the wealthy Mr. Elliot, a potential husband. The story Finding Her Edge features a similar complicated romantic situation for its character, Adriana.
Although Finding Her Edge is geared more towards young adults than Jane Austen’s Persuasion, it’s still become a hit on Netflix. The series launched on January 22nd, and as of January 23rd, it’s currently ranked third in Netflix’s global Top 10. It’s only behind Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials and the mystery thriller His & Hers, starring Tessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal.
Currently, “Finding Her Edge” ranks fifth in the US and sixth in the UK. In its home country of Canada, the show is in third place. It’s hit number one in several European countries like Slovakia, Romania, Hungary, and the Czech Republic. The show’s popularity could increase over the weekend, as many viewers will likely have time to watch all eight episodes at once.
Beyond sharing two potential love interests, Finding Her Edge and Persuasion have a lot in common. Like Anne, the main character Adriana is worried about money, as her family’s skating rink and reputation are in danger if she doesn’t get a big sponsorship. Brayden offers her a path to success, but she’s still hung up on her ex-skating partner, Freddie, who’s trying to move on.
However, Adriana’s feelings for Brayden are much deeper than Anne’s with Mr. Elliot – they genuinely connect. The show is exploring Brayden as a real potential love interest for Adriana, and her feelings for both him and Freddie allow the writers to build a compelling and dramatic cliffhanger.
If the Netflix series Finding Her Edge remains popular, a second season is likely. Because the author, Iacopelli, didn’t write a sequel, the show’s writers would have more freedom to develop Adriana’s story, similar to how the series My Life With the Walter Boys adapted its source material.
As a huge fan of both romance and sports stories, I couldn’t be more excited about Netflix’s new series, Finding Her Edge! It feels perfectly timed – everyone’s loving these ice skating romances right now, and it’s amazing it’s coming out during the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth. It’s like a little celebration of everything I love!
All episodes of Finding Her Edge are available to stream now on Netflix.
