Everyone is eagerly awaiting the next season of Euphoria, and while the recent trailer gave fans a small taste, new episodes are still a ways off. Luckily, Saturday Night Live is offering a hilarious parody of the show, featuring Sydney Sweeney and Zendaya in typically over-the-top situations.
Finn Wolfhard, known for his role in Stranger Things, hosted Saturday Night Live recently and won over viewers with a sketch about possible Stranger Things spin-offs. He also appeared in a funny crossover sketch featuring Harry Potter and a game called Heated Rivalry. The episode included other jokes referencing HBO and HBO Max, but a sketch full of Euphoria references didn’t make it to air due to time constraints.
Thanks to the beauty of the Internet, however, you can give it a watch now.
In a funny sketch, Finn Wolfhard pretends to have a goatee and brainstorms ideas for Season 3 of Euphoria, as some storylines still need development. They invite a TV writer who recently worked on Reba McEntire’s Happy Place, and the writer immediately suggests silly plot points, such as Rue having a chocolate addiction instead of a serious drug problem.
The comedic bit continued with James Austin Johnson, playing a writer, joking about how adding a character like Sydney Sweeney’s – known for her appearance – would make the show even more outlandish. He expressed shock at the direction HBO’s shows are taking and proposed a storyline where the cast of Euphoria returns after a holiday break. In this scenario, only Zendaya’s character has read Moby Dick, and the others curiously try to see what she’s reading.
The humor in this sketch comes from a new writer who doesn’t understand the dark and dramatic tone of the show Euphoria. He keeps trying to make it feel like a lighthearted, half-hour sitcom, similar to Boy Meets World. It’s funny to watch, but not quite as hilarious as the Potter/Heated Rivalry sketch. It makes sense why they cut it, especially since they already had another sketch focusing on HBO.
It’s great that these performances are preserved on YouTube, even if they weren’t quite ready for television. Everything deserves to be seen, and I’m excited to see what Teyana Taylor and James Austin Johnson bring to the show this week – especially what surprises Johnson has beyond his amazing Trump impression.
