The newest Game of Thrones spinoff on HBO follows the journey of a knight named Duncan “Dunk” the Tall and his assistant, Egg. However, according to co-creator and showrunner Ira Parker, George R.R. Martin, the original creator of Game of Thrones, might have initially envisioned this funny story about the two companions in a different format than a TV series.
HBO gave Parker the freedom to adapt the story as he and George R.R. Martin envisioned, focusing on Dunk’s perspective. Parker explained that the 30-60 minute runtime allowed them to tell the story the source material demanded. Since most viewers are already familiar with the original novella, they wanted to stay true to the main plot and avoid unnecessary detours.
Parker talked about whether the show’s release schedule could be adjusted, considering the episodes are shorter than those in Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, which typically ran for an hour. He admitted he initially expected one episode to be released each week, and speculated about options like releasing two episodes a week or making the whole season available at once. He noted the enjoyment of having a new show you can binge-watch, recalling how he grew up watching television.
Even though Parker acknowledges releasing two episodes weekly would be advantageous, he believes the current release schedule for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is actually working well.
As a film buff, one thing I really focused on with this project was making sure each episode felt like its own complete story. I didn’t want it to feel like we just chopped a long movie into six pieces. Each episode needed to have its own distinct vibe and purpose. We really tried to achieve that, and now I’m eager to see if it resonated with audiences!
Another Game of Thrones Movie Might Be on Its Way
Although plans for a movie called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms have been scrapped, a Game of Thrones film isn’t completely off the table. Author George R.R. Martin recently discussed various topics, including his difficult relationship with House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal, his work on the next book, The Winds of Winter, and a potential future project focusing on Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros.
HBO is developing a new project from The Batman writer Mattson Tomlin. It could be a dramatic TV series or a large-scale movie similar to Dune. News of a Game of Thrones movie surfaced in October 2024, and it’s currently unknown if it’s connected to this new development. Because the story of Aegon’s Conquest is shorter than the book House of the Dragon is based on, this could finally bring Game of Thrones to the big screen.
New episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premiere every Sunday at 10 PM ET on HBO.
