Soon after it first aired, Game of Thrones became a cultural phenomenon, sparking conversations everywhere and staying popular even after its divisive ending. Recently, the world of Westeros has grown with two new prequel series available on HBO and through HBO Max. The newest, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, surprised viewers with its premiere, and honestly, it’s made me excited about this new show.

Both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon are intense, dramatic shows filled with conflict and violence. They’re not typically known for being funny, so the first episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms really stood out. I especially appreciated how it subverted fan expectations in a surprisingly blunt way.

A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms’s Premiere Crapped Over Our GOT Expectations… Literally

Now that many people are discovering how to watch A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, I was excited for its debut last Sunday. Unlike House of the Dragon, where keeping track of the dragons and their owners is key, this new prequel has a self-contained story. Plus, it’s surprisingly funny and offers a lighthearted contrast to the often serious tone of the series.

The show immediately signaled a shift in tone right from the start. The very first scene, where Dunk experiences a rather unpleasant digestive issue, was accompanied by the familiar Game of Thrones theme song. This unexpected and humorous moment made it clear that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms would be quite different from what viewers had seen before.

The first episode, “The Hedge Knight,” held even more surprises. It featured humorous flashbacks to Dunk’s early days as a squire – a unique editing style for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms that felt reminiscent of shows like Family Guy. The creators are clearly willing to experiment and challenge viewers’ expectations of what the Game of Thrones universe can offer.

One of the ways the first episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms playfully poked fun at Game of Thrones was during a training scene. Duncan pretends to be a knight and jokingly tells an imaginary opponent, “Stop raping, Ser.” This was a surprisingly funny nod to the numerous and controversial sexual assaults depicted in the original Game of Thrones series, which were a recurring and often criticized element. The line felt like another instance of the new show playfully teasing the original.

I absolutely loved A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and I’m really excited to see how its funny and quirky style develops over the next five episodes. While I enjoy the more serious tone of House of the Dragon, this is a refreshing and enjoyable change for the series.
