Chevy Chase Is Painted As Controversial, But His Family Sees A Different Side To Him

Chevy Chase starred in many popular comedies from the 80s and 90s, but he’s also become known for reports of on-set conflicts and difficult behavior. While the truth of these stories is debatable, the negative reputation has persisted. Now, after years of hearing the same accounts, Chase’s family is sharing a different side of the actor – a side that contrasts sharply with the public’s perception.

A central theme of the new CNN documentary, I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not, is the complex and often difficult story of Chevy Chase’s career. While the film doesn’t shy away from his past struggles, it also suggests there’s a deeper understanding to be had. In a recent interview with People magazine, the beloved comedian chose to highlight what’s most important to him today – particularly his 43-year marriage to Jayni Chase – rather than focusing on his professional achievements. He told the magazine:

I’ve never known a more honest or beautiful woman. I adore her scent, especially on her neck. When she’s washing dishes, I playfully announce I’m on my way and sneak up to kiss the back of her neck.

It’s rare to see a Hollywood relationship last as long as theirs, particularly with the ups and downs of Chase’s career. He speaks about his wife with genuine warmth and humor, which is a surprising contrast to the tough persona he often shows the public.

Jayni Chase admits her husband isn’t perfect, but she emphasizes that his imperfections aren’t his defining characteristic. She portrays him as charming, hard to hold a grudge against, and genuinely unconcerned with appearing tough or overly masculine. She has said that…

I’m a strong woman, and I believe it takes a special man to be with a strong woman.

The story of how they first connected is similarly complex. Jayni shared in a 1990 interview with Barbara Walters that she initially dismissed the attention from one of the original cast members of Saturday Night Live. However, she changed her mind after witnessing how much a thoughtless remark hurt his feelings. That’s when she understood there was a real gentleness hidden beneath his comedic persona.

Chase feels most comfortable and at peace when he’s with his family. He’s a father to three daughters – Cydney, Caley, and Emily – and a delighted grandfather to Ivy, Emily’s daughter. At 82 years old, he says being a father is his greatest achievement.

It’s what I’m proudest of.

Chase has often discussed a difficult upbringing, marked by both the loving presence of his father and physical abuse from his stepfather and mother. He fondly remembers his father’s playful attempts to make his children smile, a memory that stayed with him. Today, he finds the most joy in the laughter of his granddaughter, who, at just a year and a half old, brings him immense happiness.

While Chase is known for controversy, the documentary also explores a more sensitive side to his personality. It acknowledges his difficult relationships with colleagues, including a well-publicized falling out with Community‘s creator, Dan Harmon – so much so that the film reportedly had trouble finding cast members from the show willing to be interviewed. The film also revisits a past conflict with Terry Sweeney, a former Saturday Night Live castmate, who claims Chase tried to push a sketch with offensive content during the AIDS crisis. Chase, however, disagrees with Sweeney’s account of what happened.

The documentary isn’t without its dramatic moments, including a tense exchange where Chase strongly criticized the director. The director has admitted that interviewing Chase was often difficult.

This more understanding look at Chevy Chase doesn’t ignore the difficult parts of his career, and he and his family don’t want anyone to forget them. It simply adds another layer to his story. He’s a man who could be difficult or thoughtless at work, but is also incredibly loving and dedicated to his family. It’s a contradiction that most people – except those closest to him – will likely find hard to accept.

The new documentary, I’m Chevy Chase, and You’re Not, is now streaming on CNN and will be added to HBO Max on January 31st.
