As a big fan of reboots and revivals, I’m really interested in Fox’s upcoming Baywatch series! I just heard they’ve brought on McG to direct the pilot and be an executive producer. He’s got experience with this kind of thing – he actually launched the Charlie’s Angels movie franchise back in 2000, and he’s directed a bunch of other films like We Are Marshall, Terminator: Salvation, and even the fun horror-comedy The Babysitter. So, he seems like a solid choice to bring Baywatch back to life.
Fox is bringing back Baywatch for a new series expected to premiere in the 2026-2027 TV season. Filming will begin in March at Fox Studios in Century City and on the beaches of Venice, California. The studio is currently holding open auditions for the cast. This announcement comes as part of a larger deal between Fox Entertainment and McG’s Wonderland Sound and Vision, which will develop new projects for the network.
Can McG Turn ‘Baywatch’ Into a Hit?

Columbia Pictures
McG is a seasoned television director and producer. He started with the 2002 Fox series Fastlane and has since directed the pilot episodes for several popular shows, including Chuck, Shadowhunters, Lethal Weapon, and the recent Disney+ revival of Turner & Hooch. Beyond directing, he’s also been an executive producer on successful series like Supernatural, The O.C., and Nikita, as well as the series Human Target, which was based on a comic book series.
Baywatch was a hugely popular TV show from the 1990s that followed the lives of lifeguards at work and during their personal time. Over its 11 seasons, it became a major part of pop culture, revitalized David Hasselhoff’s career, and helped launch the careers of stars like Pamela Anderson and Jason Momoa (who later appeared in a spin-off). In 2017, Universal Pictures tried to bring the show back to the big screen with a reboot starring Dwayne Johnson, Alexandra Daddario, Zac Efron, and Priyanka Chopra, aiming for a similar style to McG’s Charlie’s Angels. While the movie earned $177.9 million globally, it wasn’t well-received by critics or fans of the original series.

The recent revival of Baywatch is part of a larger trend in television and film. CBS brought back Matlock with Kathy Bates, updating the classic show originally starring Andy Griffith. NBC is also planning a reboot of The Rockford Files. On the movie side, Universal is working on new versions of Miami Vice and Knight Rider. Fox is hoping Baywatch fares better than their previous lifeguard drama, Rescue: HI-Surf, which lasted only one season in 2024-2025.
