As a huge fan of Chainsaw Man, I’m absolutely loving the current arc! Tatsuki Fujimoto is really pulling out all the stops with this final battle – it feels truly epic and almost biblical in scale. And the best part? After a massive 12-chapter fight between Denji and the War Devil, Yoru, things are wrapping up in a way that might just bring back Denji’s best friend – and I couldn’t be more excited!
Chapter 227 of Chainsaw Man, titled “The Taste of Shrimp and Blood,” is packed with constant action. After a quick pause in their battle, Denji and Yoru were confronted by the powerful Locust Devil in Hell last chapter. This Devil was such a threat that it drove them both out of Hell and into the human world, even forcing Yoru to swap bodies with Asa. Now, in Chapter 227, Denji and Asa team up to defeat this enemy from Hell, but Denji needs to remember that he can’t trust devils.
The Locust Devil Gives Denji and Asa a Battle They’ll Never Forget
Chapter 227 of Chainsaw Man shows Denji struggling against the Locust Devil, who seems nearly impossible to defeat. While death isn’t really a thing in the Chainsaw Man world anymore, that doesn’t fully explain just how strong and resilient the Locust Devil is.
Denji was facing a difficult fight against Locust, but Asa helped him, even if it was just a little. After Locust cut off Denji’s arms, Asa threw one back to him. Denji then used his chains to pull the Locust Devil closer and defeat it.
This chapter proves that the artist can still create thrilling action sequences in the classic shonen style. While Chainsaw Man has always been stronger in its storytelling and creative use of panels than in its fight choreography, chapter 227 is a welcome change of pace, especially considering this battle has been ongoing for more than twelve chapters.
Okay, so the action is incredible, but I’ll admit, the art style in Part 2 gets a little messy. When you add in tons of blood and guts constantly around Denji, it can sometimes be hard to actually see what’s going on in the fight. But honestly? After ten pages of non-stop battling, it all leads to this one amazing panel of Denji absolutely covered in the Devil’s remains – it’s brutal, but so cool!
Denji defeats the Locust Devil, quickly returning the focus to the main fight against Yoru, and leaving fans wondering what the point of that brief encounter even was. Though the battle felt like a distraction, and the excessive violence didn’t enhance the artwork, the author consistently excels at capturing…
Denji compares the taste of the Locust Devil to shrimp, a playful reference to the fact that locusts are a popular food in Japan, often described as tasting like a blend of sunflower seeds and shrimp. While this joke might not be as familiar to Western audiences, it shows how well the manga artist understands and portrays his characters.
Yoru Finally Defeats Chainsaw Man in Chapter 227
I watched as Denji barely had a moment to enjoy defeating the Locust Devil before Yoru took advantage of his relief. Asa briefly smiled, looking relieved by Denji’s win, but that quickly faded, replaced by a strange, unsettling joy as Yoru abruptly resumed her attack.
Yoru defeated Denji with her signature “Bang” attack, firing two shots that knocked him out. The chapter ends with Yoru preparing to fire one final shot at the weakened Denji, seemingly sealing his defeat. However, knowing the author’s tendency to surprise readers with unexpected twists, it’s probable that something else will happen to change the outcome.
Yoru’s ‘Bang’ attack at the end of Chainsaw Man chapter 227 feels conclusive, but it could also be a misdirection. Considering the significance of ‘Bang’ within the manga’s story – it was first prominently used by Makima when she tragically shot Power in chapter 81, ‘Paw’ – it’s difficult to assume the obvious.
The connection between Bang and Makima becomes particularly important in Chapter 227, especially given its title, “The Taste of Shrimp and Blood.” Since Power is the Blood Devil, and Denji just came back from Hell—where Power was reborn—the chapter’s title might be a deliberate hint from the author, Fujimoto.
Power’s Return Feels Imminent in The Chainsaw Man Manga
Chapter 227 of Chainsaw Man features very little dialogue—only 34 words across 15 pages, including grunts and groans. However, the chapter powerfully conveys meaning through its visuals. Denji plummets to the earth after Yoru’s attack, resembling a fallen angel with his arms acting as severed wings. As he lands, a group of pigeons quickly flies away.
Denji’s fall from the sky is powerfully depicted, and the inclusion of pigeons subtly enhances the scene. It’s reminiscent of Gustave Doré’s painting, “The Fall of Satan to Earth,” which hangs behind Makima when she kills Power. Throughout Chainsaw Man, fans have noticed many biblical allusions in the story. The scene of Power’s death, especially, seems to connect to biblical concepts of heavenly beings – fitting, since characters like Power are even named after “Principalities and Powers” from the Bible.
With the recent appearance of the Locust Devil, fans have understandably begun revisiting the symbolism of locusts, especially considering their importance in Abrahamic religions. The Bible recounts how Moses warned the pharaoh that Egypt would suffer plagues, including a devastating swarm of locusts, unless the Israelites were freed. Notably, this plague of locusts is immediately followed by the plague of a river turning to blood.
Chainsaw Man’s War May Be Over, But The Battle is Only Beginning For Denji
Although Fujimoto draws inspiration from the Bible, Chainsaw Man isn’t a direct retelling of biblical stories. The series mostly uses religion as a source of ideas, and it’s also very critical of organized religion – as seen in the story arc centered around a literal Chainsaw Man Church.
While the biblical allusions in Chainsaw Man don’t reveal the future, they offer clues about what might happen. The story’s direction towards a massive conflict in Part 2 strongly resembles the biblical Armageddon, with devils causing widespread destruction and figures mirroring the Four Horsemen. The appearance of the Locust Devil could be foreshadowing the next major threat: a devastating ‘plague’ linked to Power’s reincarnation as the Blood Devil, potentially manifesting as a river of blood.
Considering the chapter title and its dramatic ending, the Blood Devil’s return feels almost certain. This is good news for Chainsaw Man Chapter 227, “The Taste of Shrimp and Blood,” which isn’t a particularly surprising installment. After twelve chapters of fighting, Denji losing to Yoru would be disappointing if it didn’t lead to something bigger, like the return of Power. However, if the hints in the story are accurate, Chainsaw Man Chapter 228 promises more action when it’s released on Tuesday, February 3rd, after a short break.
The Chainsaw Man manga is available to read via Viz Media, Manga Plus and the Shonen Jump app.
