Before becoming known for his role as Jackson Lamb in the Apple TV series Slow Horses, Gary Oldman appeared as Doctor Zachary Smith in a 1998 film revival of a beloved science fiction show, which is now gaining popularity again through streaming.
The sci-fi adventure Lost in Space, featuring William Hurt, Matt LeBlanc (known from Friends), Jared Harris, Lacey Chabert (Mean Girls), and Heather Graham (Boogie Nights), is currently popular on Tubi. As of January 20th, it’s the eighth most-watched movie on the free streaming service, according to FlixPatrol, surpassing titles like Double Jeopardy and I, Frankenstein.
When the 1998 film Lost in Space was released, it grossed $136 million globally, with $69.1 million of that coming from U.S. theaters. The movie cost $80 million to produce and was directed by Stephen Hopkins, who worked from a screenplay by Akiva Goldsman (known for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds).
The show Lost in Space originated from a popular CBS television series that aired from 1965 to 1968. That series itself was inspired by a comic book from Gold Key Comics, and both were loosely adapted from the 1812 novel The Swiss Family Robinson by Johann David Wyss.
As a big movie fan, I remember when Lost in Space first came out – it got absolutely slammed by critics! It currently has a pretty low score on Rotten Tomatoes, just 27%, and audiences weren’t much kinder, giving it only 24%. But, believe it or not, it actually managed to knock Titanic off the top spot at the box office when it was released, which was a huge surprise at the time!
Oldman Will Be Back as Jackson Lamb
Although Gary Oldman’s work on Lost in Space didn’t receive any awards, he did win an Oscar for Best Actor in 2018 for his performance in Darkest Hour. He’s also been nominated for an Academy Award twice more – in 2012 for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and in 2021 for Mank.
The show will return for two more seasons on Apple TV. Gary Oldman, who plays Jackson Lamb, the leader of Slough House, received Emmy nominations in both 2024 and 2025 for his performance.
Lost in Space is streaming on Tubi.
